Totem Stools

The Totem Stool has a pyramid shaped notch in its side that allows you a little bit of versatility. Stack them up for a sort of sculpture or storage solution, or maybe even utilize the pyramid notch for a temporary book rest. They’re lightweight and durable, and should you want them to stay put on a deck or patio, simply fill them with sand or water.

Quick-Step Stool

What’s the big deal about a simple step stool? Well, for starters, this Quick-Step Stool is made from solid oak and looks like the letter A in profile. That makes it easy on the eyes. The step may be used on either side and there’s a handle cut into the top, so that makes it quite functional. Easy on the eyes and functional? Yep, there’s your answer for those hard-to-reach higher-up spots in the kitchen or closet. It’s even nice enough to leave out for an extra seat or side table.

MilkMaid Stool Custom

I’m such a sucker for small wooden stools, mostly because they offer quite a bit of versatility. Side table or extra seating, whichever you need, a little stool can be handy to have around. These custom milking stools by grayworksdesign are a variation of the traditional three-legged stool that we all are familar with, but the design is updated just enough to fit into any room, be it rustic or modern. Engraving is also offered should you wish to make it a special gift.

Holy Stool and Candy Table

This colorful table and stool by UM Project would be a great choice for occasional tables. Whether you choose to go monochrome or mix colors, the duo-tone finish would add interest and warmth to a room. It’d be smart to use the sturdy stools as side tables for daily use and then as extra seating when you have a few more guests than chairs.

Plopp Inflated Stool

We’ve featured this little guy before, but after several years, he needs his info updated. This stool appears to be inflated plastic, but is, in fact, made from welded steel sheets that are industrially inflated. This manufacturing process (called FiDU ‘Freielnnen Druck Umformung’ = ‘free inner pressure deformation’) was developed by Oskar Zieta and allows for lightweight forms to hold a fair amount of weight with minimal material. No two are alike.

Lerival Felt Stool

This isn’t new, but who cares? It’s still a felt stool that holds weight simply by its folds and rivets. Think origami, in a larger scale and in felt. Exploring the most efficient use of fabric led to this design with a comfortable saddle-shaped seat. Designed by Moorhead & Moorhead and manufactured by Lerival.

Model Six Stool

Several years ago when we posted this stool, 2007 to be exact, it was simply known as the ‘Covey Stool’ from the designer Jeff Covey. Now its name is the Model Six, and it’s on sale from MoMA Store for $349.95. Chrome-plated steel legs snap together and the walnut seat can be adjusted from 24″-28″ height, making this strong stool an excellent flat-packed option for your bar or counter area.

Kaktus Stool

Lightweight yet strong, this sturdy aluminum stool can be used indoors or out. Use it as a stool or side table, or, flip it over and it becomes a basket for logs, toys, towels, or whatever else you can think of. Made from 100% recycled aluminum, the Kaktus was inspired by the fibrous skeleton of the Staghorn Cholla cactus. Designed by Enrico Bressan, architect and co-founder of Artecnica.

Maia Table

You might not like the price tag, but you certainly will like how this side table can also be used as a step stool. No more dangerous episodes of precariously balancing on an inappropriate surface to reach a book, and no more apologies of not having that one extra seat for a surprise guest. Plus, take a look at the joints: it’s clear that this is built to stand the test of time.

Container Stool New Antiques

Plastic is not what many of us would call a luxurious material. However, it is pretty durable when it comes to high traffic areas, and that’s why this Container Stool by Marcel Wanders is sure to make the list when a smaller budget dictates a long-lasting seating and/or table option. The ornamental base references a more traditional style while the smooth top will hold your books, lamps, drinks, or derrière comfortably.

Black Steel Stool

Now here’s something we all want to see more of: multifunctional furniture. The Black Steel Stool by Noon studio is an interesting seating option on its own, but pull a few together and you have a coffee table; stack several straight up, and you have a bookcase. The wooden y-frame supports a simple metal sheet, and the two materials joined together provide a visually appealing warm/cool contrast.

Holy Stool

This stool is a familiar riff on the Milking Stool by UM Projects we posted a few years ago, yet with this variation, the legs are a bit farther apart for stability. So, sit on it, put your feet up, or use it for drinks and books, and know that it won’t topple over easily. The legs are dipped in ultra-matte lacquer for a bright contrast.

Arnold Circus Stool

I know you’re probably in holiday shopping mode, but calm down for a little bit to appreciate this Arnold Circus Stool. I’m not sure how it slipped under the radar, as it’s been around for a while. Not to worry though, there’s still time to congratulate ourselves for finding it now, and then figure out just where we’re going to put it before it arrives. Because at $120, this stool comes in a variety of colors and has varied uses: an extra seat, a side table in the living area or bedroom, or turn it upside down for a storage basket.
