Balise Pendant

Atelier de Troupe is hitting the right sort of note with their Balise collection. Just take a look at the pendant: a little retro Jean Royère inspiration moved this fixture from ‘quiet modern’ to ‘quiet-yet-playful-modern’, and that’s the secret winning combination when it comes to sophisticated interiors. Four 6″ ball glass shades hang side by side to make a 36″ width, 40″ drop height pendant, which fills a space above a dining table or kitchen island perfectly.

Utility Mirror

You know that weird section of your hair on the back of your head? This hand mirror will help you see it, and hopefully fix it, so you won’t look like a bum when you roll into the office each morning. It’s made by polishing a piece of stainless steel to a mirror finish, and then dipping it into an industrial rubber tool grip. You certainly won’t need to worry about breaking it (to clarify, by dropping it) because there’s no glass to break.

    Yogibo Bean Bag

If you can get past the fact that this is, in fact, a bean bag, let’s ask this question: Does this or does this not look incredibly comfortable? I know, I know, it’s really hard to get past the video-gaming-soda-drinking sort of perception we have of bean bags, and, let’s be clear, no one is saying you should put this in your living room next to a Wegner Chair (the horror!).

    Spectrix Card Game

What to do when an uncomfortable lull sets in amongst a friendly/family gathering? Pull out the cards, of course. And, seeing as not everyone knows that complicated card game that everybody else and their aunt plays every Thursday, why not mix it up with a color card game called Spectrix? It’s a play on the card game Rummy, just extremely simplified- it’s based on groups of color matches and sequences. No need to read suits or numbers, so it’s appropriate for all ages. Just build strategic groups of color to play out your hand. Easy, right?

    Leather Trim Storage Desk

$699 for a leather, wood, and brass desk? Not too bad of a price, eh? Leather panels across the front surface of this desk lift up to access the drawers below. Brass studs and struts compliment the acacia veneered frame, while plenty of your desktop miscellany will fit into the double-cubbied drawers. There’s even cord cutouts and storage along the back. You’ll be organized and have money to spare. Now, let’s move on to what you can buy with that extra money…

    Bento Bowl

This Bento Bowl won’t make your life any better if you never bring your lunch to work. However, if you do, then it stands a fighting chance to make your midday break a little more tidy and enjoyable. Styled after the traditional Japanese bento box, this bowl system is layered and stackable to separate your meal and transport it safely. You’ll be delighted when your lunch isn’t smushed or mixed with your other snacks or drinks- unless you like disintegrated chips or crushed fruit all over your sandwich. Maybe you’ll even get creative with a little bento box art, hmm?

    360 Shelf

This isn’t an ordinary wall shelf- it turns 360 degrees for custom display options. A built in adjustment system lets you angle it any which way- books, magazines, tablets, you name it, and it’ll look more interesting when you switch it from a 45 degree angle to a 70, just because you feel like it. Group a few together for a bigger statement or just get a couple for your favorite reading spot. Fun!

Paloma Triangle Coaster Set and Trivet

A set of bright coasters with a cubist-inspired print is just one small way to combat the dreariness outside the door, for who could feel glum with such cheery patterns around? Wolfum brings us the Paloma Triangle Coaster Set and Trivet, all made of birch wood in the USA. Add it to your gift list possibility pronto- for that favorite coworker perhaps?

    Gramovox Bluetooth Gramophone

Gramophones made in the 1920s did a couple of things really well; they distributed sound and made a big visual impact with their curvy, horn speakers. Considering we are all about streaming music from our devices nowadays, it’s good to see that Gramovox has married the old Gramophone design with bluetooth technology, giving us the Gramovox Bluetooth Gramophone, a sort of nostalgic filter in which to play our tunes.

The solid walnut base houses the brains, putting the rest of our focus on the larger steel horn. No cords means less clutter, but it also means batteries, though 15+ hours is a good span of play time, and no big deal when you rely on rechargeables. It’s Android™/IOS® compatible, of course, and has a micro USB & stereo input. It’s not the first modernization of the iconic gramophone shape, but this version certainly has an authentic and minimal edge over any competition.

Snow Peak Wooden Stacking Mug Set

Snow Peak’s wooden stacking mugs might not look like much, but if you’re out on a day trip, they’re a perfect pairing for a full carafe of hot tea or coffee. Hand-crafted in Japan, they’re lightweight, durable, and, in my opinion, a pleasure to hold. Consider adding them to your lunch, picnic, or campsite bag for a more tactile (and dignified?) drinking receptacle.

    Porter Bar Cart

When you entertain family and guests this holiday season, don’t look like a glipe rushing around to find your cocktail shaker and gin/vodka/whiskey/etc. Instead, look calm while you preside over the Porter Bar Cart and deposit drink requests smoothly into your guests’ hands. Two sustainable mango wood trays may be lifted out to pass around drinks and/or appetizers, and the aluminum wheels will make shifting the party from the dining to living area quick and easy.

    Wish Lists 2014

If you haven’t already been peppered with gift suggestions and guides in your inbox, here’s a hint: the holiday season is here. This year we’d like to try something different. Instead of featuring our online (and in person) friends’ wish lists like we do every year, we’d like you to submit your list. What would you, a semi-faithful reader of BLTD, like to give or receive this year?
