Swish Console Desk

Console or desk, does it matter? What matters is that this Swish Console Desk from Blu Dot has a clever sliding top that conceals a drawer or work top, depending on your preference. There’s a cord management slot, so you can fit your laptop/tablet in there with no problem, and cover it all up if it gets too messy. Excellent idea, isn’t it?

Scout Stool

A sloping seat gives comfort, and Southern Yellow Pine shows off its intricate patterning. This Scout Stool was constructed using mortise and tenon joints along with other time-tested construction techniques. And it’s $180. Available for pre-order from Surname Goods.

Flexi Flash

No, the Flexi Flash is not a new dance move, nor is it an old disco rock band (to my knowledge), but it is a small lighting device that can light your way in the dark. Beam and strobe options are features, as well as silicone handle that makes it bendable and easy to attach to your bag or bike.

    Tom & Jerry Stools

Adjustable stools are great choices for kitchen counter bars, as they can accommodate all sorts of people- from wee kids to big adults. These two stools by Konstantin Grcic each feature a brightly-colored polypropylene screw mechanism where the height can be easily changed to suit the sitter. Simply spin the top to make it go up or down.

    Supra Bed

Woven cane usually is an attribute of more traditional furniture, but there’s a few movers and shakers that are mixing things up and applying it to modern designs. This Supra Bed designed by Mermelada Estudio incorporates perforated woven cane into the curved headboard, giving texture and warmth to an architectural oak grid.

    Y.bowl

If a regular sit-on-the-floor steel bowl for your furry friend just won’t work with your dรฉcor, you might be a little too concerned with details. That said, hello, nice to meet you, please sit down and join the club; your design obsessive tendencies are welcomed here. The Y.bowl from Doca Pet (literally) elevates the common steel bowl to a considered receptacle for your pets, and with different sizes and heights, you’re able to pick the perfect size. There’s also a fair bit of other similarly modern designs, Squaremeal being my second favorite.

    WrongWoods Tray

Can’t afford the $7,150 WrongWoods Long Credenza? How about the $2,970 WrongWoods Night Table? If your response to both these questions is rolling your eyes and wishing for the umpteenth time you’ll win the lottery, you need to take in this number: $220. It’s a tray, which is significantly smaller than a credenza or cabinet, hence the significantly smaller price tag. It’s still not cheap, of course, as it is a collaboration between British artist Richard Woods and designer Sebastian Wrong, but it does give you a chance to appreciate (and own) their work on a smaller scale.

    Robert Indiana LOVE Notecard Set

If you absolutely have to send out cards this Valentine’s Day, please make it be this set of notecards featuring American artist Robert Indiana’s screenprint of 1968 Black and White LOVE. You have one whole week for the notecards to arrive, write out whatever sappy sentiments you like, and then send them off to those lucky recipients. Maybe they’ll even frame the card in a small frame (I know I would).

    Mails Woodwork

It’s rare that you get four or five pieces all from one designer in one post, but Ryan Mails of Mails Woodwork caught my eye with the clean lines and excellent craftsmanship of his heirloom-quality furniture. You’ll find all of his current items below with a few words from him describing what brought about each piece. Visit Mails Woodwork for more pictures and information (there’s a mailswoodwork Etsy shop as well).

History of America in 101 Objects

Here’s an idea, pick up a book and learn something. Do I sound like one of your grandparents? Good, because that generation will be the only people that know anything about history if you keep playing whatever game on your phone that adds NO MEANING TO YOUR LIFE WHATSOEVER. The History of America in 101 Objects provides a literary exhibition of, you guessed it, 101 objects that offer a “marvelous new perspective on the history of the United States.” If you’re truly lazy, think of it as a history picture book for your brain.

    Ourt garden tools

If you have spent any time gardening, you know the value of a rake, shovel, and hoe. Now, add a little modern styling to those very valuable functions, plus a wooden base for storage, and you’ve got a set that will have any design aficionado plonking down their credit card. Some of us may be dissuaded from the Ourt Garden Tools’ high price tag and possible overseas shipping charge, but I’d hazard a guess there are others that think it’s worth every cent.

    Cory Arcangel Umbrella

If it’s going to rain, you might as well brighten up the dreariness with a bright red umbrella, and if that bright red umbrella’s design is based on a PhotoShop gradient Cory Arcangel made for Showpaper, well, then that’s even better. The only drawback is you might have a few inquiries from strangers asking where you obtained such a delightfully graphic rain shield, and then you’ll have to (ugh) talk to them instead of pretending to ignore everyone.

    Metallic Folios

Normally a folder won’t inspire anyone to get organized, but a gold or silver folio, well, that’s a different story. Shiny, special materials such as silver and gold catch our eyes and stand out in a stack of papers, thus providing you with a reason to add to your office supply collection. Plus, when considering the need to get organized, we need all the motivation we can get. Choose between silver or gold; there’s also matching metallic notebooks.

    Tallow Candles

Ambiance. Say it with me, A-M-b-i-a-n-c-e. That’s what a lot of interiors lack due to bad overhead lighting. Now, if you’ve got the money, hire a professional and get your home’s lighting fixed as soon as possible, as fame and fortune is sure to follow once your guests see your face under flattering light. If you don’t have the money, the simple solution is to buy a few candles and light ’em up. For extra design credit, these Tallow Candles will softly illuminate whilst also referencing a little old-world elegance, giving your table more refinement than cheap(er) candlesticks.
