The Dorm Shelf

Extreme minimalists: ignore this post. Everyone else: if you simply must display your trinkets and tchotchkes, consider the Dorm shelf by Ferm Living. It’s a more modern option than anything you’ll find on eBay, and will set off your collectibles without offending anyone’s eyes.

Micro Coat Hooks

Do these make you want to say ‘no comment’? Similar to a journalist’s microphone, these flocked foam coat hooks will softly hold your clothes without any weird dimples or disfiguration (small pegs and hooks are the worst offenders of this). Sold as a set of five, there are 3 small and 2 big pieces.

MMM Magnifying Glass

Update: Remember when this was $80? Now it’s half off at MoMA Store.

Let’s say you don’t need a magnifying glass to aid poor vision. Instead you’ll use it to inspect small insects, fine fabrics, and secret messages written in tiny print. Also, not that you need fashion advice, but this is a much better choice than wearing a monocle.

Woolfiller Kit

I know it’s just the beginning of fall, but may I ask you to assess your sweater collection? And, if, by chance, you find a few holes or stains in your favorite woolen or cashmere item, do not despair, for there’s a relatively easy solution found in the Woolfiller kit by Heleen Klopper.

It’s easier to show the video (below) than to walk through the instructions, but, trust me, anyone can do this. And, yes, it might be a little quirkier look than you’re used to, but I’d encourage you to try it out on at least one piece of clothing, for you’ll save yourself the time and money of replacing the item completely. Keep in mind that the patches tend to stand out more when the colors are varied (as shown in the image above), but you can mix or match however you want. Also, don’t just stop at sweaters; you can use this kit to repair rugs, curtains, etc.

Bookmarker

If you still carry around actual (as in paper paged) books, take a look at these metal text bookmarks by Artori Design. Choose between TO BE CONTINUED, COMING SOON, GREAT BOOK!, PAUSED, and YOU ARE HERE. I’m sure we could all think of some other great options should they wish to add to the collection.

Happy Labor Day! What are you doing on the computer?! Get outside and enjoy these last moments of summer. Posts will return as usual tomorrow.

Shown above: EcoQue’s Portable Grill

    Cuissential SlickBoil

‘Cuissential Slickboil’ sounds more like a skin ailment than a tea kettle, but let’s forget that for the moment. It’s a collapsible, silicone tea kettle. Presumably this would be handy in a camping situation, but I’m more impressed with the fact that it looks good enough to keep around a small kitchen. Of course, wherever you use it, be careful that the flame doesn’t exceed the stainless steel base, or you’ll have a slightly melted mess.

    numbermyhouse

If your house facade needs new numbers, be sure to check out these options from Canadian company numbermyhouse*. Best of all, no drilling is required, as they have a super strong peel-and-stick adhesive backing. If you happen to have rockwork or another tricky surface, you’ll need to add some stand-off kits ($5 per letter) to accommodate the unevenness. You can also customize lowercase letters or a special font, just email them for a quote. Pick any size from 6″ to 16″ tall.

    Veil Trash Can

Perhaps you don’t mind looking at messy plastic bags, but then maybe you’re a slob. If so, wise up to elegant trash cans like this one. It has an interior and exterior shell which allows for the plastic bag to be completely covered, permitting a clean silhouette. You’ll have to high five yourself each time you put in a fresh bag because it’s so simple and clever.

    BrickBox

This might look vaguely IKEA-ish, but rest assured its origins are in Spain rather than Sweden. Modular boxes are stacked to create a versatile and very portable storage solution. The boxes are deep enough for vinyl records or cable boxes and may be disassembled for shipment. Do make note that you’ll need both the large and small modules to create a finished edge as shown above.

    Portable Body Scale

If you hadn’t seen the title, would you have guessed what this was? At first glance, it sort of looks like a new tablet device, or very huge smart phone. Or a pice of plastic that reads your weight by scanning your irises. All those exciting things are unfortunately incorrect, as it is a portable body scale. However, if you’re a tad fanatical about losing some of those pounds, you will be excited, because now you can weigh yourself wherever you want. Have a small bathroom? It’s only 8.27″ x 4.33″, so it’ll fit. Weigh yourself (or your suitcase) when traveling, or pull it out of your bag while you’re waiting in line at the fast food joint.

    Table-top Paper holder with Cutter

If you’ve ever used large paper rolls, either for your own art/design use or because you are around kids, you know that they can be a little annoying to use. This tabletop wooden paper cutter holds the roll in place and allows for a neat, straight tear, making everyone’s life just a little easier. There’s also the IKEA MÅLA Tabletop paper holder option for $6.99, and, of course, more robust (and slightly more expensive) steel options available through school supply outlets or Amazon. Or, if you’re handy, you could make a DIY version like this one by Ana White.

    Pilot Lamp

Just the word ‘sconce‘ brings to mind older, more traditional interiors, but this lamp from Misewell definitely belongs to the more modern day home. With a mid-sized proportion, the lamp is a great choice for bedside or hallway, or even paired up on either side of a large mirror.
