Rig Barstool

Sustainable Mango wood plus a pop of hi-gloss red, and it’s adjustable (~ 4″) too… you can’t really go wrong with this barstool. At $149, it’s firmly in the affordable category, which is always nice to see, especially if you’re needing a trio.

Food & Fold Placemat Set

Normally I wouldn’t advocate using paper placemats, but these become animals, and that changes the whole ballgame. These are obviously geared towards kids and I’m sure they’re perfect for encouraging little ones to clean up after dinner, but I think it would be fun to have these at a low-key dinner party with friends, as each guest would be able to fold up their placemat and have an animal to take home. Sure, it’s a bit silly, but sometimes a little silliness is nice to have in our seriously adult world.

Tattly Temporary Tattoos

You’ve most likely seen or heard of the recently launched Tattly, a site offering decently designed temporary tattoos compiled by none other than Tina Roth Eisenberg, otherwise known as swissmiss. My favorites: Knucks by Frank Chimero, Tattone by Josh Smith, Cursors also by Josh Smith, and Rabbit by Marc Johns.

$5 for a set of 2 or all 15 for $35.

Virgo Metal Wall Organizer

This wall organizer is on sale from $59.95, which makes it an absolute steal if you’re in dire need of a landing pad for notes and messages (and keys and letters, etc.). It looks like powder coated steel, but you might want to email the retailer before purchasing just to make sure (and be sure to ask after the dimensions too so you’re not surprised when it arrives and it’s bigger/smaller than you had hoped).

Global Entry Program

If you travel to international destinations more than a couple of times a year, you might want to consider the Global Entry Program. It’s a trusted traveller program that allows speedy passport checks and customs declaration. Upon arrival, you’re able to go straight to the Global Entry kiosks where your passport is read, fingerprint verification is taken, and customs declaration is printed out, all of which takes about 3 minutes. You completely skip the long lines for passport checks, which are usually half an hour or longer (as you might know), and proceed directly to the baggage claim and exit.

I applied/joined last year, as I travelled back and forth from the UK to the US several times, and I fully recommend it. You do have to go through a background check and interview*, which most likely takes an hour total, and it costs about $100 for the application fee, but that quickly becomes well worth the time and money. It’s been incredibly convenient to skip right past the long line for passport checks, and I’ve noticed lately that airports are increasing the amount of kiosks as more people apply (even so, with airports that have two or three kiosks instead of a dozen, I’ve never had anyone in front of me). Interested? Global Entry: How to apply. Also, to check and see if your home city has enrollment centers and kiosks, see the kiosk & terminal maps.

Caliper Coffee Table

Here’s a coffee table that puts an end to clutter: two hidden drawers reveal storage at each end, making a secret spot to stash away tv remotes, games, and reading materials. Not a bad price either. (There’s some assembly required, but I’m guessing it’s just attaching the legs.)

Will You Ever Use Me Again?

Artist and designer Dino Snachez created this series of pencils as a reminder that “technology has displaced our use of a basic, steadfast tool of craft.” Apparently New Yorkers will soon find them throughout the city (especially Apple stores), as they’re meant to be taken and used by the public.

Sold as a set of 10 pencils.

    Perch Bunk Bed

I don’t know a lot about kids’ furniture, but I do know if a piece costs over the $1000 mark it better look damn good. Luckily, this bunk bed looks better than most adult beds, and will stand the test of time thanks in part to a sturdy Baltic birch plywood and FSC certified eco-MDF frame. As with most bunks, it separates into two beds (a loft bed and a standalone twin) should your little ones want a different configuration.

    On This Day Perpetual Calendar

Need some color in your office? This dry erase perpetual calendar would certainly add that (a rainbow=pow!) along with some knowledge: rub each black box and the heat friction reveals an interesting event on that date in history.

Laminated for use with dry erase marker (not included). Made in the UK.

    Green Chair by Javier Mariscal

How nice is the recent trend of furniture being made of recycled materials, thereby making the piece recyclable when it’s at the end of its life cycle? Very nice, indeed, and it’s certainly a trend to keep. This chair by Javier Mariscal is made from recycled polypropylene with a stacking metal base or a non-stacking wooden base. While I’ve only found one UK retailer so far, I’m sure there’ll be some retailers stateside that will pick it up (fingers crossed). Produced by Mobles 114.

The Green chair meets the Management System of Ecodesign UNE 150301.

    Keychain Letter Opener

You must have used a key at some point to open a letter. I know I have, many times, mostly because I misplace the one letter opener I have, and I am too impatient to go and find it. This little guy lives on your keychain, at the ready for any envelope that comes your way.
