Plattfuss Rubber Bands

Rubber bands made of recycled bicycle tubes. Making flats useful = nice. Also, another item making flats useful is the smart IT Clip that Simon posted a while back. It allows you to make your old inner tubes into tie down straps.

A bag of 70 in assorted sizes.

3styletable

Maybe this table won’t win first place in a beauty contest, but it sure will beat the pants off others in a triathlon. It can convert from dining table to coffee table to desk, without tools or finicky extra hardware. And it packs flat for easy storage and transport. See what I mean? It’s multifunctional, and in any tiny apartment space that wins hands down.

LINK Furoshiki

Furoshiki, which you might be familiar with, are a type of traditional Japanese wrapping cloths that can be used for all sorts of things. This particular print seems particularly eye catching with its graphic red/white design, and while you could use it for wrapping a gift (or a wall hanging, or as a scarf, etc.) it seems like it would be a great gift all on its own.

Also, I found this site called Furoshiki.com which seem to specialize in the subject… the Animals White ($34) is a nice one, also Palace ($42).

Silhouette Bench

Okay, if you just glance at this bench quickly, it might appear a tad overly antique-ish, yet it has some modern touches, such as the high gloss lacquer and the super flat seat. Now, at £525, it’s not really at a bargain-basement price, but if you put it side by side with the New Antiques Arm Chair for £1,495.00 by Marcel Wanders (see below), it seems like one hell of a deal. There’s also a Silhouette Chair (£250) if you are interested, though it seems to be out of stock at the moment.

Lift Lamp

This is a custom ordered item from Science&Sons, who are well known for their Phonfone, just to get that out of the way first. Now, besides it being actually an interesting shape for a light, the idea behind the LIFT LAMP was to create an object that was fun to clean, so, to dust this lamp you’d fly it like a kite. Delightful idea, isn’t it? The light collapses down fairly quickly for easy transport.

Materials: Sailcloth, Graphite tubing, metal fittings
Size: 48″ DIA. x 22″ H.

Stick2Me

This is the sort of thing you’d see in a public setting perhaps, but I think it could work in a home environment just as well*. Whichever you prefer, this set is available in both broadsheet-format and magazine/tabloid size and has room for eight or four newspaper sticks.

-Available in oak and birch
-Treated with cold-pressed linseed-oil

*Guess it depends on your taste, but I like seeing some public purposed items appropriated.

Analarm

Analogue alert anyone? If you tend towards the non-digital, you’ll maybe like this square faced alarm-clock-inspired watch. Instead of chirping or beeping, the alarm creates a vibration on the wrist like a mobile phone.

Big Top Tablecloth

Normally soft, subdued colors draw my eye, and I would guess most of us play it pretty safe when it comes to color in our homes. Maybe it’s the perpetual grey weather of January that has me itching for crazy-in-your-face color… you know, the kind that makes your eyes water and brings delight and sometimes even a ‘for goodness sakes!’ response. Now, this tablecloth might not tick all those boxes, but it is ‘fun’, with its big top imagery, even if it is a little bit juvenile. It’s appealing with its bright red and white and tassels (tassels, for goodness sakes!). Just the thing for this time of year.

Handmade of cotton in India.

New York-based Rich Brilliant Willing has teamed up with Artecnica to bring us these recyclable cast glass pendants. Hang one as a pendant lamp or group several together to make more of an impact… or if you should so choose, lay one on its side as a table lamp.

Hive Honey Set

I’m a big fan of honey. A little bit in chai tea, on bread, with plain yogurt, etc… I go through a small jar so fast it’s silly. Now, I’m thinking this set from BioDidactic Designs might just outperform the plastic squeeze bottle that’s near its end, plus it’ll look a lot nicer on the counter or tabletop.

Cardboard Chess by Londji

You might remember a cardboard chess set featured here before (see NewWave Chessboard), but I’ll take a chance in saying this one is a bit more refined with the black and white color scheme. However, it’s worth pointing out that the other might be handier for travel purposes as you don’t need to assemble the pieces each time.

Endy Stool

Love, love, love this stool. The color coded ends of timber are emphasized in the design of this stool, thereby “preserving a hint of the origins of the wood” and giving us an altogether colorful little seating option.

Shipping seems to run around $29.00, fyi.

Oak, ash, maple, mahogany, cherry.

Vertigo Bedding

I’m sort of loving the black and white stripes of the new-ish Vertigo Bedding. There’s something so simple about building on a base of black and white… with this duvet, you just need to add an extra pillow in a nice accent color, maybe a throw at the end of the bed for softness/texture, and ta-da, your bedroom is finished off. Also, the same stripes are available in a wallpaper (Vertigo Wallpaper), which I plan to post soon.
