Maison Martin Margiela’s Feather Pen

What frivolity is this, you say? It’s a Bic pen with a real ostrich or goose feather, perfect for those times when you need a bit of over-the-top flourish in signing important documents (mortgage, birth, divorce papers, etc.)…

London Design Festival 2010

Here’s several photos from the past few days of London Design Festival. By no means are they comprehensive, but they at least show some of products that stood out. (Fyi, some photos are from the 100% Design preview post from last wednesday.)

ACNE Furniture Collection at Liberty

As part of the London Design Festival, ACNE launched its first furniture collection at Liberty. Inspired by the work of Swedish designer Carl Malmsten, Jonny Johansson (creative director of ACNE) distorted the lines of the furniture to create an altogether strange version of seating shapes. The five sofas will be available exclusively at Liberty this spring.

#146 Rotating Squares table

While I organize my thoughts from 100% Design and Tent London, I’ll leave you to admire Tom Cecil’s Rotating Squares table. It’s more than impressive in person and I took a short video (on my phone, so don’t have high expectations) to show it in action. Orders are taken on commission and start at £2000.00.

Elsie Dodds

I’m more than a little taken with these alphabet cushions by Elsie Dodds. Each cushion is decorated with all sorts of imagery attached to a particular letter which is printed on the reverse. It’s up to you whether you find it appropriate for your living room or for someone learning their ABCs, and maybe for some of you it’ll be both.

Clap on Cube Clock

Yes, it’s a clap-on-clap-off clock. And you thought that particular technology had fallen by the wayside… not so! The LED responds to any sound, so whether you clap or make some other loud noise, the display will be activated. There’s an alarm feature as well, if you need it.

Available in dark and light wood veneer.
Clap your hands to make RED LED time appear.

Bookshelf Wallpaper

If you love the look of books but don’t have the space (or money) for stacks of bookshelves, maybe this wallpaper will do the trick. Similar in idea to the Genuine Fake Bookshelf Wallpaper we’ve posted before, but maybe just a tad bit better seeing as it has a more realistic look. Sold in 3 meter length rolls. 55cm wide.

100% Design (preview)

We’ve been getting all sorts of emails on London Design Week events, but the big two that I’ll definitely be attending are 100% Design and Tent London. After a quick look through 100% Design’s gallery preview, these are the products I’m looking forward to seeing in person tomorrow. I’ll plan to take some pics (if/when allowed) and upload them afterwards.

As usual, keep in mind that all products usually take a while to become available through retail websites, so contact the designer directly if you have questions.

A Grand Taxonomy of Rap Names

Should you need some classification in order to understand and absorb the wonderful world of rap, add this print to your list. Arranged according to semantics, there’s 266 sobriquets from the rap music genre.

Softwood Chairs by Veronika Wildgruber

Have you seen these wooden hand sculpted chairs by Veronika Wildgruber? Note that I inserted ‘hand sculpted’ right off the bat so you wouldn’t expect big box store prices. All three chairs (more shown below) are limited editions, so you might want to get a move on if you’re interested. Wildgruber’s Wood Bulb Lights (£150/light) are also worth checking out.

Imperial Rug

We posted this way back in 2005, and if you’ve searched our archives, you know that updates are often needed. This rug by Nauris Kalinauskas is perfect for anyone that likes mixing things up occasionally, as you can interchange the pieces to fit the size and color combination you want. Each set has 10 pieces of the same color, so you can combine multiple sets to find your own unique color pattern.

Deam’s Home Renovation

There’s a great slideshow and article over at Dwell of Chris and Lara Hedberg Deam’s (Dwell’s founder) new home renovation. I found the attention to detail particularly impressive, most notably in the built-ins and finishing touches, and the landscaping has already found its place at the top of my inspiration files. Altogether, it’s a job well done.

Voltaic Switch and Amp Solar Chargers

Votaic Systems just launched two new solar chargers that seem handy enough to give a try. The Switch (on left, $129) is a small bag that can carry a day’s essentials while the Amp ($99) is a smaller case that fits into a bag or purse. Both, of course, have solar panels to provide power to your gadgets. For reference, either can charge an iPhone in under 5 hours. Specifications below.
