Stainless Steel Straws

Hmm, ‘drinking fun’? Not sure how much ‘fun’ these will add to your drinking, but they are kind of an interesting alternative to the plastic straw. I wonder how you’d clean them? Dishwasher? or maybe with those pipe cleaners in your craft drawer?

“Stainless steel is one of those rare, exceptionally functional and durable materials that manages to combine indestructibility with presentability…The stainless steel drinking straws come in a set of 4. These straws do not rust or tarnish and provide years of drinking fun.” –after5catalog

Jupiter Bucket and Vase

This makes me want to get my hot glue gun out, though I doubt the end result would look as nice as these.

Molded from colored hot glue. Vase bottom is made of scrap pieces which have been melted down and dyed black. Water tight. Wipes clean with water. Looks like glass, feels like rubber!
May be used as a planter, a fancy waste basket, or a decorative container.
Each piece is hand crafted. Made in New York City.

Gunta Stölzl Plate 160 Rug

Originally created on paper at the Bauhaus in the 1920s, this work by Gunta Stölzl is impressive to behold. Realized into being by weaver Jack Lenor Larsen, the design (and price) should perhaps interest you enough to do a little design history research before purchasing.

A notable figure at the Bauhaus, Gunta Stölzl is known for her textiles as well as her leadership as one of the few women to teach at the Bauhaus, and the only woman to hold a senior role on the faculty…she explored ways to “reinvent” weaving and in the process evolved it from craft to industrial design. Fellow student Anni Albers described Stölzl as “having an almost animal feeling for textiles,” and having an affinity for color. (Stölzl credited Paul Klee with opening her eyes to how colors interact with each other.) Her work also shows an understanding of omnidirectional design, in how it is satisfying to approach each rug from any angle. –DWR

Good price on these cafe chairs…the colors are quite nice, and just in time for the spring/summer weather around the corner.

Faux Wood Beams

I think I remember originally seeing this subject in Domino (so sad to see it fold), and just recently remembered the idea when staring up at my oh-so-not-spectacular living room ceiling. It seems like a great way to add some character and interest to a room without going full out crazy on construction costs.

They’ve got a good variety of instructions to help you through installation, which, of course, I’d recommend taking a look at before you buy.

Price varies according to size and wood type. Buy it here.

Liquid Sink – Black

Somehow I missed the fact that DWR had expanded its bath collection to sinks and tubs. Some of the prices seem a little steep, but the looks are top notch.

Living up to its name, the smooth interior of the Liquid Sink is interrupted by only a single groove that allows the water to slip through. The drain, which is hidden by a resin panel, is accessible by lifting the panel, whether for cleaning or to add a stopper if you want to fill the sink with water. The barely visible p-trap (the under-sink drainpipe) furthers the clean aesthetic. An adapter kit comes with this European-style sink to make it compatible with U.S. plumbing. The Liquid Collection is designed by Nuria Coll, who is part of a Barcelona-based team that works solely on items for the bath.

Pawnee Media Console

Modern media consoles usually seem to be super shiny and pretty expensive. Not that there’s anything wrong with super shiny, but I do like how this ‘rough hewn’ piece gives a casual warmth and contrast to any gadgets displayed on top…and it’s under the $1G mark (even if just barely).

Low flung walnut media console with rough hewn doors that add a contrasting texture to the satin finished frame. Sitting on scaled down beam legs, the Pawnee also features Corian inserts around the finger pulls.

Lotus Teacup

This is one high-tech teacup for those of you that are serious about tea. Follow the link to read more.

It looks like every traditional teacup should, but for starters it’s double walled, so a) you won’t burn your hands and b) your tea won’t cool off as fast. Secondly its sliding lid is a beautiful piece of high tech, as it is truly integrated into the lid and all you do is you slide a separate piece up and you are ready to enjoy your tea.
