Catalog: The Illustrated History of Mail Order Shopping

We’re all familiar with mail order catalogs, and, yes, they do clog up the recycling bin, but have you ever thought about how they are documenting everything from our fashion to food styles? Catalogs from decades ago chart how we lived by what we bought, and this book gives an overview of the catalog’s history, from the first Montgomery Ward book to the most recent companies. My favorite: an overview of 45 years of the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book (what luxury at the time) and seeing celebrities model clothes in their pre-famous days. The background stories of how some companies began are quite interesting as well.

Not For Tourists Guidebooks

What an excellent interpretation of a guidebook- if you’ve lived in a city for a little while or a lot, it’d be interesting to see what things you haven’t seen or done.

“Not For Tourists is a growing series of guides to major cities. Their philosophy is simple: people need to use the cities they live in, commute into, or travel to effectively. They need to use their city’s transportation systems; its governmental infrastructure; its shops, restaurants, and nightspots—and they need all of this information while they’re on the move in a format that’s more accessible than the Yellow Pages, more informative than Zagat’s, and more useful than any other tourist’s guide out there.”

Solar System Wall Clock

While some of you might firmly put this clock into the ‘for-science-type-kids’ folder, I think it could work in a less-serious/non-stuffy modern interior…so anyways, here’s the main question, if this other clock is the same one, then why the big price difference? The hands look a tiny bit different, and the ‘brushed silver’ frame of course, but as far as the face and size it’s the same. (Can you tell I get annoyed when there are price discrepancies?)

Debate the classification of planets while being punctual…The black face is silk screened with planetary bodies and their orbits, all centered around the sun.

Postcard Airplane

Now you can send mail that can be immediately recycled into something fun.

…Excellent for kids and grown-ups who are just big kids, it’s made from balsa wood and the pieces easily pop out to form your very own loop-de-loop, flying glider. It’s much more fun than ordinary mail and once you write a little message on it, it becomes post with a bit more love and personality.

Platform Coffee Table

Here’s a nice coffee table option with Scandinavian styling…just at $400.

As seen in Milan. Scandinavian modern and mid-century refresh in matte white lacquer with two discreet drawers (hallelujah, storage…) in warm acacia wood veneer. Recessed solid wood legs taper under unexpected angled lift at both ends. Lacquer protects.

Dusty Table by Jason Miller

This table would probably drive me crazy, but I can appreciate the idea and execution.

In the spirit of thrift shops and new vintage, Miller’s Dusty Table reflects very little but subtle inevitability. With a layer of what looks to be dust embedded in the finish, its unpolishable nature suggests perfection despite its apparent lack of shine.

Vega Collection

This is probably one of the more versatile sofa/sectionals out there, and until tomorrow (Jan 27), you can get DWR’s upholstery sale price as well as free shipping (Feb 3), which all adds up to some pretty significant savings.

The Vega Collection (2005) provides a unique solution for environments used for socializing, lounging and sleeping. When a larger Sofa is needed, the Chaise and Ottoman are ready to oblige; slide the pieces together to create the required size. Should a sectional be in order, two or more pieces can be quickly combined. For further flexibility, the arm of the sofa can be positioned on either side and changed on a whim. The Sofa and Chaise transform into comfortable sleepers by sliding the seats – which rest on metal bases with internal tracks – and folding down the arm of the Sofa or the back of the Chaise. Made in Denmark.
