The Slat House

Check out the massive skylight/window and polished concrete surface…I’d move in there, no questions asked.

“Extension of a small semi-detached family home on a large plot in Blackheath. The modular timber extension wraps around the side of the semi-detached house; it peeps through the adjacent trees of the rear garden and provides access onto the side terrace.

The extension provides a fourth bedroom and second bathroom on the first floor. The ground floor has been dramatically reorganised providing a new playroom and a library for the client’s extensive collection of books and fine art prints. The kitchen and dining area is re-housed in the extension and benefits from unobstructed views of the garden. The interiors are fitted with bespoke furniture and storage space designed by Turner Castle.”

Periodic Table

I saw this while we were at
ICFF a couple of weeks ago, and while it was (and is) spectacular, I had no idea it was coated with natural silver, which makes it extremely unattainable to the average consumer. I really do think it’s amazing, but, come on, if you’re spending that kind of money on a coffee table you might need to visit some third world countries to get some perspective.

“Superficial or authentic? This striking piece puts equal emphasis on surface and substance. Using a proprietary process, a massive block of wood is coated with a brilliant layer of natural silver, and a bloom of tarnish around the knots and cracks, resulting in a piece whose stunning surface does nothing to hide the individuality and character of the wood beneath.”

Combining the standard mirror with pegs and hooks is not a bad idea, though there’s the risk you’d lose the nice design features by covering it up all the time with coats and jackets.

Paper Plates by Virginia Sin

Super smart (porcelain) Paper Plates so you can have the summer feel without the waste.

“I shredded actual paper plates, which previously where used to mold the plates, and then combined the paper pulp with porcelain slip to create my own unique batch of environmentally sound paperclay. When paperclay is fired, some of the paper pulp burns away leaving a lightweight yet strong ceramic structure behind. This allows the porcelain-paperclay paper plates to be nearly as light as the actual paper plates. Also, to ensure everyday porcelain wear and tear, each of the plates are glazed on both sides.”

Microwave and dishwasher safe.

Naughty Floor Lamp

This is one stupendous (albeit expensive) floor lamp.

“Naughty, as in pine, makes each lamp an individual work of art. Sundayland starts out with the highest quality of California grown knotty pine available, hand turning the base and stem, naturally bringing out the character and sheen of the wood. For the shade, pine is taken to a whole new level, near transparent, then backed with an invisible polyurethane. Light glows through the grain of the wood, knots and all, illuminating any environment.”

The Tides, Riviera Maya

Tatsuki Masaru: Decotora, 1998-2007 Japanese Art Truck Scene

When I was in art school a fellow classmate once talked about how he thought trucks (in the US) were all about glamour, with their lights and fancy mudflaps and extra reflectors. The whole idea struck me as entirely true, yet also completely funny considering the stereotypical idea of someone that might drive an eighteen wheeler, and how unlikely they might be to admit to decorating their vehicle in order to be seen as “glamorous”, an adjective often used to describe young lip-glossed celebrities. Well, these decorated trucks (i.e. Decotora) from Japan are sure celebrations of glamour and their owners look like they’re pretty proud to admit it, just as they should be. Fascinating.

Celebrity Vinyl by Tom Hamling

This has to be worth a flip through.

“Celebrity Vinyl is a laugh-riot reminder of what happens when famous people decide to (unsuccessfully) give singing a try. The number of celebrities, and pseudo-celebrities, that have indulged such hubris boggles the mind: Burt Reynolds, Shaquille O’Neal, John Travolta, Eddie Murphy, Leonard Nimoy, Alyssa Milano – the list goes on and on, as do the laughs. Over 100 photographs of the album art that houses these celebrity recordings are paired with gut-punch funny captions.”
