Modernism Reborn: Mid-Century American Houses

I’m a mid-century modern home junkie, and despite my very recently built home, I’ll always be addicted to reading about the restoration of truly innovative architecture of that particular time period.

“This book gathers mid-century designs that are austere and simple, use natural materials, and address space as a positive and layers of furniture and trimmings as a negative. Modern houses are comfortable in their juncture of light and open floor plans; they yield timeless designs that remain “modern” 50 to 60 years after the fact when other designs are headed toward being “antique.” This well-designed volume is as comfortable and straightforward as the modern houses it celebrates. Quality photographs of each house in its setting, as an interior, and as a tribute to a philosophy join with an informed and useful text that supports but never upstages the designs.”

Green Ratings-Refridgerators

I really don’t know what I would have done if my house didn’t already have appliances when I bought it. I probably would have spent at least a few weeks going over all the pros and cons and prices. Or maybe I would have found
greenerchoices.org, where they’ve done all the research for you, including energy efficiency ratings.

Padme Rug

I really like how the overall design is made up of small dots/circles, so that it lends a contemporary feel to a more tradtional flowered pattern.

My Cuppa

If you’re still in the middle of last minute holiday shopping, this might be a thoughtful gift for someone that’s particular about how they take their tea or coffee…

‘Although the question “how do you take your coffee?” seems simple enough, for the caffeine-connaisseur, a non-descript “two creams, one sugar” does not always acheive the desired results. My Cuppa helps you mix your drink to the perfect consistency, based on the color-coded guide inside. Options include everything from a straightforward “milky” to an extra-strong “builder’s brew”.’

2.75″W x 3.75″L x 4.5″H

White Fishnet (limited edition), 2006

I love, love, love this chair. Too bad it’s got the ‘price available on request’ tag- that pretty much means that I definitely can’t afford it.

“This chair is hand-made by Marcel Wanders through his studio in the Netherlands, in a limited edition of 20 pieces. A Certificate of Authenticity is provided.”

materials: aramid and carbon fibers; epoxy

33″ x 14″, height 29.5″

Reclaimed Patchwood Cube Cabinet

Maybe I’m crazy, but I’ve always been one for the more eclectic look at home, and maybe that’s why this cabinet caught my eye. I like how it has a relatively modern structure overall, with the different types of wood being the interesting thing about it…and I think whatever pieces surround it in a home would determine the classification of style- if you put it with country rustic, it would definitely read that way, but juxtaposed with something modern it could be a really unique modern piece.

“…handmade from barn wood, molding from houses and beaded board. This unique accent piece is a patchwork quilt of interesting patterns and textures handmade by Georgia artist Margaret Taylor. Combining rustic material with practical and modern design, this sturdy steel patchwood cube will be an ideal storage piece in the dining room, bedroom, bathroom, entry way or kitchen.”

Woofer Speaker System

Here are some speakers that would certainly make a statement.

‘Pun intended, the “Woofer” is a co-axial speaker system consisting of two dogs. The custom engineered electronic filters make for great sound, and the aesthetics – well, you’ve definitely got two new best friends.’

Price shown for a set of two.

20″H x 11.5″W x 17″D (per speaker)
Material: Polyester.

Speaker: 60watt – 180 watt RMS, 4 ohm impedance.

Zip It Gear Passport Pocket Sock

I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a country where you feared your passport was in danger of sticky hands, but I sure have and I really really wished this was around then…(I think I got one of those thigh strap holders and it sucked, to put it bluntly. It was completely uncomfortable, which I should have expected, but I didn’t know any better. I ended up sticking my passport in my camera bag, which increased my fears about getting mugged on the streets about ten thousand times. A sock would have been much better.)

Price: $24.99

Tom Ford

Not to sound fashion addicted, but I want this book…(very coffee table worthy).

“This book is a complete catalogue of Ford’s design work for both Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent from 1994 to 2004. It chronicles not only Ford’s clothing and accessories designs for both houses, but also explores Ford’s grand vision for the complete design of a brand, including architecture, store design, and advertising”
