When it’s raining out, you’ll need a spot to rest your wet umbrella. Sure, you could lean it up against a wall to let it drip down on the floor, possibly creating a safety hazard where someone could slip and fall, hurting their pride and also possibly breaking a few bones, or you could do the sensible thing and get an umbrella stand. The Hoop has a heavy and compact cast-iron base with a slender oval wire rim suspended above; it’s both minimal and functional. The pink color is my favorite, but if you want to stick to the tried and true black option no one will fault you.

An entirely new measuring tool that combines three in one is just the thing to reduce desktop disarray. Every once in a while there’s a furniture or accessory item that makes me wish I had a totally empty house, just so I could start with one piece and build outwards, completely tailoring the whole house around one single aesthetic. Ethnicraft’s Oak Blackbird Sideboard is one of those pieces, to be sure, as its black outline neatly delineates its stack of natural oak doors, compartments and drawers. How could one be messy with this sideboard sitting in one’s dining or living room? (I’m sure you’ll try, but I’ll roll my eyes and shake my finger at you if I see even one little paper out of place.)

Are you up for a bit of chemistry when making your morning brew? If so, this Pebo Vacuum Coffee Maker from Bodum could be an interesting experiment. How does it work? Steam escapes from the bottom bowl into the top, mixing with the oils of your coffee. Once you remove it from heat, and the newly brewed coffee filters back down into the bottom bowl for serving. That’s a simplified version, of course, but you get the idea. It’ll take a little longer (5 to 11 minutes) than a regular coffee maker but the brewing time and temperature are calibrated precisely for a perfect cup each time.

Why do you need a walnut, puck-shaped thingamajig? Well, it’ll keep your charging cords and cables it place, so you can avoid crawling around on your hands and knees behind/beside your desk/sofa/bed every time one slips away. Remove the magnetic base, snake cables through the channel, pop the base back on, flip it over, and all your cords are tidy and secure.

Need a dining table or work surface? You can’t go wrong with one of the three Snaregade* Tables by Norm.Architects, as it has such slender supports for its oak veneer tabletop. That leaves plenty of room for legs, and, with such a spare and elegant look, it would be right at home in the dining room or office. The Snaregade was originally a one-off design for Bjarne Hansen, Menu’s creative director and founder, but Norm.Architects were so fond of it they made a few for their own studio. Now, thankfully, it’s a collection available to all.
