Candlelight

Fire Kit, Aluminum

Remember the brass Fire Kit? Now Fort Standard has an aluminum version at a slightly lower price point, which means it’s much more tempting to add one to your home this autumn. You get a waterproof canister (with a precision knurled cap) with the message “Fire – Light & Warmth – Strike on bottom” and Strike Anywhere Matches. Use the radial striker machined into the bottom of the canister to light each match. Handy, isn’t it?

Fin Candleholders

Add a little candlelight to your evenings this autumn by getting a couple of Fin Candleholders. Inspired by the hulls of classic boats, the candleholders are constructed from laser cut steel that slots together. They’re resistance welded, so don’t expect them to arrive flat-packed. Do expect them to cast a flattering glow to those gathered around your table.

Buka Candlestick

The Buka Candlestick employs two pins to keep a candle suspended above its metal dish. Visually light and effortless, the look is elegant and a little mysterious; it may be just the thing to add some ambience during the winter evenings ahead.

Terracotta Lantern

This lantern is strange, and that’s probably why we like it. The handmade terracotta lantern has a handle on its backside to make it easier to move around- perhaps to and fro your outdoor dining area and inside? It certainly won’t be mistaken for anything found at your local hardware store, as it has an odd-yet-friendly sculptural presence.

Chamber Light

If you’re particularly attuned to any and all forms of lighting ambience, chances are likely that you’ll not settle for any ol’ hurricane lantern for all the summer evenings ahead. So, feast your eyes upon the Chamber light, which is appropriate for tealights or oil. A small handle incorporated into the base makes it quite portable, while the glass shade is just.. well, pretty.

Bougies Russes Hurricane Lamp

Beatiful, aren’t they? Inspired by Russian Matryoshka dolls, these Bougies Russes Hurricane Lamps can be placed inside each other or lined up in a row. The lower portion of the glass is tinted to partially obscure the candle, thus giving off an “ethereal luminosity” fit for any occasion, inside or out. Designed by Stephan Lanez and manufactured by Paris based brand Marcel By.

Pipe Candle Holder

Danish designer Pernille Vea based this candle holder on a 6th century Viking design she saw in the National Museum. It’s rudimentary, for sure, yet it’s also quite handy as outdoor lighting as you could hammer or spike them into trees, the ground, the table, etc. (just make sure if it’s your table you’re all right with a few holes). And, they’re on sale: $24 down from $35. See Danish designer Pernille Vea talk about the design in the video below (or on Youtube).

Tallow Candles

Ambiance. Say it with me, A-M-b-i-a-n-c-e. That’s what a lot of interiors lack due to bad overhead lighting. Now, if you’ve got the money, hire a professional and get your home’s lighting fixed as soon as possible, as fame and fortune is sure to follow once your guests see your face under flattering light. If you don’t have the money, the simple solution is to buy a few candles and light ’em up. For extra design credit, these Tallow Candles will softly illuminate whilst also referencing a little old-world elegance, giving your table more refinement than cheap(er) candlesticks.

Spin Candelabra

Hey Santa, if you’re going to blow your budget on my Christmas present, please make it this Spin Candelabra by Tom Dixon. It’s one heck of a centerpiece, and pretty much takes the place of a low light or chandelier above a larger table. The candelabra’s arms spin 360 degrees to give a variety of configurations, and, as it’s made from cast iron, it will last forever.

Les Perles Candlestick

It’s like building blocks, except dangerous (does it not look like an ice pick without the beads?) if one’s temper is out of sorts. The wooden beads are removable, which gives you a chance to reconfigure the design as you wish. Right now the Les Perles Candlesticks are a little less with DWR’s Dining Sale, fyi.

What is it?

Now, for another game of ‘What is it?’ Do you know? Can you guess? Hint: it is not a torture device, nor a strange sort of holder for a beverage. It was designed by Carl Mertens, who has designed all manner of steel accessories, and measures approximately 5 x 3 inches. Do you know now? Answer below.

Menorah by Josh Owen

How about a hefty menorah? This one by Josh Owens is made of solid cast iron and has an integrated tray to catch wax drippings (or a used match). Happy Hanukkah!

Also, if you’re looking for a menorah, take a look at the Jewish Museum Shops… they’ve got plenty of good ones.

Sale: Match Candleholders

Update: These are now on sale from $75.00 to $18.75! Craziness.

This is so smart. These candleholders have a vent for a match, eliminating the burnt finger scenario that often occurs with tealights. As I’ve caught the holiday-gift bug, it’s necessary to mention they’d be a good present option, no matter the event or recipient. Actually, on second thought, that might get you into trouble. Maybe make sure the recipient is somewhat interested in decor/candles, then it’s a safe bet. One set includes 4 Candleholders.
