Ceiling/Pendant

Cymbal Pendant

Well, what do we have here? It’s a very simple pendant that uses the light bulb as support for the shades. Aluminum disks diffract the light and trick your eye with reflections of its environment. Does it remind you a little of the Grain Pendant by Brendan Ravenhill? It’s the same sort of idea, and a little more affordable at that.

Cocentric Flush Dome

Prepare yourself, for this dome lighting fixture isn’t what most of us would call affordable. However, it is handcrafted on a lathe (take note of the perfect concentric grooves) and is available in several different American hardwoods. Plus, it can either be positioned on the wall or the ceiling, so you’re not locked in to just one location.

And, it does get quite dark at night, so what better way to illuminate a special spot indoors than with a set of string lights with natural brass sockets and black cloth twisted cord? Hiline Lighting

You can make your own deconstructed, utilitarian lighting, but will your attempt look as good as these Hiline pieces? And, while we’re considering your skills, let’s reflect on the price of the Hiline Spotlight, Sconce, and Pendant, and think about if it’s worth the time and effort to make your own, or if it’s best to just support someone else that’s doing it right. I vote on the latter.

PH 5 Pendant Light

If you’re going to buy a PH 5 Pendant Light, it might as well be on sale. This classic light was designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958 and remains one of the smarter choices for glare-free illumination. You’re probably familiar with the slightly more popular PH Artichoke by Henningsen, yet the price tag on that makes it a little less attainable. The curved reflectors on the PH5 ensure that light is directed appropriately, and, with several superb color combinations, it’s a perfect choice for above a dining table or workspace.

Muuto’s Grain Pendant

At first glance, you’ll most likely wish Muuto’s Grain Pendant was a bit bigger than ~8″ in diameter. However, once you see a few lined up over a kitchen island or a large grouping over a table, you’ll be glad that it’s not too large, as the size is perfect for multiples. Get up close and personal, and you’ll see the shade is made from a mix of bamboo fibers and polypropylene, which gives it a subtle texture and warmth. Now on sale.

The rotating arms allow for quite a bit of variety in movement, especially considering the arms are 40″ and 48″ in length. Antipode Pendant Light

Let’s run through the very short list of requirements for a pendant light. Minimal/modern? Check. Spectacular/different? Check. Somewhat affordable? Check. Beau Pendant Light

David Trubridge is well known for his puzzle-like, open-weave light fixtures. With the new Beau Pendant, the same overlapping segment idea is used to direct light downwards, hiding the light source. The light is flat-packed, keeping with the company’s longstanding eco-conscious aim, and is available in a natural, caramel, or black stain.

Well Planter and Babylon Light

Question: How much do you want a light fixture that is also a planter? Answer: a) sort of a lot b) it’d be nice c) give it to me now. I’m wavering between a and b, because if plants were at eye level, I’d be less likely to forget to water them. You, however, would probably be ace at your plant care, and would therefore have a beautiful, thriving plant (or plants) to make a fantastic lighting statement. Designed by Ryan Taylor, of Object/Interface, the Well Planter and Babylon Light both feature space to plant greenery directly on the shade with an opaque diffuser to further soften the glow.

Giant Edison Kit

You might be yawning right now, seeing another Edison Bulb on your screen, but this one is super-sized. It’s 12.5″ in diameter. Go ahead, pick up a ruler or measuring tape to remind yourself just how large a bulb would be in that dimension. Perhaps hang one above a smaller dining table, or go for a group of three or five to make a huge statement.

Bollard Lamp

Four lamps in one, really? Yes, it’s true, the Bollard Lamp can be placed in four different ways around your home. Designer Shane Schneck planned the silicone Bollard Lamp to be used in various ways: it can drop down as a simple hanging pendant, you can angle it (hanging) as a spotlight, place it on a table or shelf on its side, or prop it up on its foot to beam light straight up. With all those options, it’ll be easy to find it a spot in your home.

Yupik Light

You probably can’t tell from the photo above, but this Yupik Light is made from polypropylene foam. That makes it very sturdy and extremely light. And did you notice the clear polycarbonate diffuser? It looks a little like a car headlight, doesn’t it? Set it on its side on a table, place it on the ground facing upwards, or hang it from the ceiling using the included hook. It’s an affordable light with many possible uses all over your home.
