George Nelson developed the Bubble Lamp in 1947 after purchasing a high-end Swedish spherical hanging lamp for his new office. Nelson was inspired to design a lighting fixture with the same look and superior lighting, but more cost effective.

What happens to all those fluorescent tube lights? Thankfully, some of them end up in the hands of Castor Design.

The Recycled Tube Light is made from burnt-out fluorescent tubes and is lit using centrally placed incandescent bulbs. The fluorescent bulbs have been reclaimed from architecturally significant buildings in Canada, such as the TD Tower designed by Mies van der Rohe, Toronto’s Old City Hall and University of Toronto.

I involuntarily gasped when I saw the String Light by Patrick Townsend are now available in black. Does that make me a dork? Maybe, but I don’t care. I’m in love with a light.

At first glance, the Patrick Townsend String Light looks industrial and exposed, with variably sized light bulbs protruding from powder coated aluminum casings, dangling at random from a black cord. Plug in this dimmable light fixture and the String Light assumes an entirely new aura. The white bulbs and unexpected red bulb glow with a whimsical and refreshing energy. Korean Designer Wonsuk Cho has designed a series of lights based on the light box commonly used to examine X-Ray film. These whimsical lights are created by taking X-rays of single incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs. The images are subsequently mounted onto small black boxes which hang from the ceiling and once illuminated reveal their skeletal structure.

Today’s apparently the day for romantic and contemporary talk. These lights strike me as a fun way to add a little color…they would look great above a small dining table or lined up in a row above a counter.

There is something both romantic and contemporary in the simplicity of the naked bulb, believes designer Mattias Ståhlbom, a partner in the internationally acclaimed architecture-design studio TAF, who celebrates the “essence” of the lamp—the socket—in a model he dubs E27 for the Finnish house Muuto. We couldn’t agree more. The colorful silicon rubber cord extends to 4 meters (13.12 feet).
