We posted some work by “the.” before–they have a smallish portfolio of really clever work and they’re worth checking out.

This particular lamp would look amazing on my bedside table. However, the -$1200 would not look good in my bank account.

This isn’t new to the marketplace, but after seeing it in person recently, I was struck by its simple beauty. The pared down elegance and size would make it perfect at the side of a reading chair.

Flat pack items are wonderful things. Less packaging is a good thing, of course, but there’s also the element of being involved (however briefly) in the creation of the object.

The lamp arrives at your house flat, with the few components ready to be assembled by your skilled hands. Within minutes, your world is illuminated not in 2D, but in wonderful, round, living 3D. You have the option of choosing what kind of light to see your world in – Light Veneer, Dark Veneer, White or Red.

Coated in matte black rubber, a crushed soda bottle is transformed into a sculptural lamp base. (I’m sure the touch of gold on the inside of the lamp upgrades the look a bit too…if the shade was white it wouldn’t look as luxe.)

Each Little Crush table lamp is made using a reclaimed PET bottle and coated in matt black rubber.

Beautiful, right? It’s also rechargable, which means no unsightly cords to get in the way of all that lovely light. It also costs a pretty penny, so be prepared.

Cailloux are solitary Swarovski crystals with a soft luminous presence. Fascinated by the remarkable aspect of the crystal’s shape, Ronan and Erwan were inspired to create unique Stone chandeliers.

So, I’m breaking the rules again sort of…this is listed as a prototype, but the designer(s) says/say that is available for sale. I’ve no idea about shipping, but seeing as these lamps are incredibly strange and cool, it might just be worth whatever the cost.

A color-cycling light that’s almost like an updated futuristic lava lamp? for $70? Yes please.

Babushka is a modern, lit version of the classic Russian Doll. Turn Babushka on and off by pushing down on the top of the light, and watch it faze through its cycle revealing varied colors as it goes.
Babushka’s dolls are revealed in a sequence of different colored lights and effects. When red the infinity effect is visible revealing a seemingly never ending row of red dolls. When blue the edges of the larger dolls are lit. Babushka continues its light effect through red to pink and purple and on to blue displaying different effects as it goes.

Personally, I think I’d prefer a different color than red, but other than than, these lamps are pretty intriguing. They certainly are different, and I like how they’re on a smaller scale, so they can be tucked into smaller work spaces perhaps.

These stark white lamps are made from sturdy iron plate, but their fluid shape reminds us more of that glass cup full of paint that we knocked over (if it had been suspended in motion).

I firmly believe every home should have something a bit weird or whimsical (if they don’t, it just so serious), and this cute-yet-sort-of-odd lamp fits the bill.

The best thing about Heico lamps is that until they’re lit, you’d never know you were looking at a lamp. The company takes such great care to give every piece real personality, that the result is a piece far more sculptural than utilitarian. This Rabbit Lamp is a great example of such work. Unlit throughout the day he looks like a statue, but at night is when he really shines.

What an odd size; just as the description says, it could pass as an oversized table lamp or a shorter floor lamp. Fun.

Dwarf sized standard floor lamp (approximately 31.5″ in height). The base is constructed in a simple but classic form made from 10mm (.4″) mild steel wire. The shade is slightly larger than life giving the lamp its unique character and sense of scale. It’s playful proportions lends itself to many situations – Low level lighting, an oversized table lamp or a child’s standard lamp.

This is pretty neat (and cheap!).

A glass that looks like it is filled with milk, but in fact, the inside has a special coating that lights up when you flip the switch. Now, you only have to flip the switch once though, because if you don’t want it to be on anymore, just turn it upside down and voila, it’s off… Perfect for a nightlight, or next to your bed or in the bathroom, or for the kids or – you get it, there are a ton of usage occasions that you can come up with.
