PD4 ABC Table Lamp

This lamp has long been on my wish list, and surprisingly, it’s actually somewhat affordable. To share a bit of its history, the PD4 lamp was originally designed by Barba Corsini in 1955 for the loft space within Antonio Gaudi’s famous building “La Pedrera”, also known as Casa Milรƒย , in Barcelona. To learn more, see the video below. There’s also a floor lamp version, which is equally desirable, (PD2 Floor Lamp) though it’ll cost you a few more $100 bills.

Helen Lamp

This little guy is something to take note of, as it’s made from 16 gauge mild steel that is “scored, folded, welded, sanded, and powder coated”… all that and you get a small 14” high lamp that’ll no doubt last longer than you.

Binic Table Lamp

The Binic Table Lamp has long been on my admired list, but I had no idea that it was so petite. Measuring just 8″ in height, it was intended as more of a ‘take-away’ item, and its easy to move scale provides a very personal sized light. Designer Ionna Vautrin was inspired by windsocks on boats, and if she had to define the lamp in three words, she would say it is “cute, colorful, and small.” Take a look at the video below to see Vautrin discuss the lamp and its inspiration.

Scantling Lamps

Ouch. These are pricey, yet oh-so-striking. Designed by Mathias Hahn, arms and hinges allow the shade to fully rotate without the need of springs or counterweights. And what does ‘scantling’ mean? It is “a term used to define the size to which a piece of wood or stone is measured and cut, derived from the name of an old unit of measurement.” There you go. There’s also a Scantling Wall Light, too, though I haven’t yet seen a retailer offer the ceiling light, which is very impressive.

Linear and Mizuu Light

Have you seen these lamps by Melissa Moore? They’re slightly scientific looking (tubes + lights) and perhaps that’s why they stand out. I particularly like the Stick Lamp and the Linear 2.0, shown above and below.

Led Anglepoise Lamp

Designer Henry Wilson takes the classic and ubiquitous anglepoise lamp and updates it with both technology and handcrafted elements. First the lamp itself is rewired for a cooler and more efficient LED bulb, then, either a ceramic or glass shade replaces the original. This is an extremely limited edition of 20, and will sell for $940. However, for $670 you can also supply your own anglepoise lamp to be updated by Wilson. I’d rather not mix up any words or intent, so here is the designer’s statement on Led Anglepoise in his own words: (more…)

Rich Brilliant Willing Lamp at UO

Hrm. After the recent Urban Outfitters debacle (you know the one), it’s a bit hazy as to whether one should patronize the shop, yet it’s unavoidable to feature this lamp by none other than Rich Brilliant Willing. You know they did some store fixtures (via designboom), but actual exclusive lighting at a price point under $100? I had no idea.

W102 LIGHT

If you ignore the price tag, this little light is simply perfect. Designed by architect David Chipperfield, its simplicity allows no visible joints, and the size (13.25″l x 4.5″d x 18″h) makes it ideal for a small reading or task light. The brass brings out the latent magpie in me, and makes it convenient to forget that it’s well suited for someone with a generous budget. Available October 1, 2011.

Modo Table Lamp

While this table lamp is a tiny bit high for my wallet, I do like the industrial feel. Designed by Jason Miller for Roll and Hill (you can also purchase the lamp here, fyi), the lamp was inspired by industrial parts found on Canal Street near Brooklyn. The Modo Chandeliers are also pretty impressive.

Big Bounce Lamp

Those of you with experience in filming might recognize the ‘bounce’ reflection/diffusion lighting technique that is utilized in this lamp by Jonah Takagi. (I’d also guess most of you without filming experience will be able to ascertain why it’s called ‘bounce’.) I particularly like the blue and yellow cord color choices. FSC Certified Oak and powdercoated steel.

Bender Table Lamp

Just so you have fair warning, this lamp won’t ship until August. It might be worth the wait, though, considering its modern bent design (powder coated steel) and lower price point. I can’t decide whether the white with the red cord wins out over the all black option; I suppose it depends on where you plan on placing it.

Available in black with a black cord or white with a red cord.

Porcelain Lantern Lamp

If you’re craving the glow of a camp lantern, here’s just the thing. If you keep the wattage low, it might make a great nightlight in a hallway or kid’s room (or your own, if you need a little reassurance in the dark).

Top Four Light from Luxit

This little Lego-ish light features four LEDs that “achieve top performance”, but what I like most is that the head flips back and forth to provide either localized bedside lighting or an overall accent light.

Available in several vibrant colors.

STACKS: LAMPS

Smart! Stack them in a tower or stick ’em in a bookcase, these birch plywood lamps are minimal and very functional. Total edition size is 20, so if you don’t snap a few up soon, you might have to get your toolbox out for a DIY version.

Placa Lamps

The Placa Lamp is a charming little light that rests on a simple board. This plinth-like base sets off the lamp and switch elements, making a sort of stage to set items upon. The double and triple versions have additional lamp shades, which add to the stage feel (almost like actors conspiring). To purchase, please contact the Show Me Gallery directly at geral(at)showme.com.pt.
