Ile w153 Table Lamp by Wastberg

In love with a lamp… that should be a song title, shouldn’t it? The Ile w153 Table Lamp, designed by Inga Sempe, aims straight for our hearts, as it can be clamped to a ledge or tabletop, mounted on the wall, or set upon a flat surface. The shade moves smoothly, as it has a magnetic connection to the base. Now, the question is, just which color would be perfect for your bedside, reading chair, or desk? (Two grey/brown lamps are calling my name, I think.)

Holmes Sconce

It doesn’t take much deductive reasoning to select this Holmes Sconce from Schoolhouse Electric as one of the better options in the marketplace. It might be inspired by the classic candle sconce in the days before electricity, but the minimalist lines in its steel backplate marks it firmly in the present. Make it your own by choosing a specialty bulb, and know that the smaller size would fit almost anywhere you need an extra source of light.

Ava Wall Sconce

No one wants to spend a load of money on a wall sconce, but when you combine a walnut backplate with a brass arm and a hand-sewn leather shade, it’s awfully hard to resist. Measuring in at the perfect size (17″ arm length), the Ava Wall Sconce would be an excellent companion to your bedside or favorite armchair. The half shade angles in various directions for a direct or indirect glow, and a simple on/off knob with a brown twisted cloth cord keeps the look humble.

Cobra Wall Sconce

The Cobra Wall Sconce might just be the coolest under-the-radar sconce ever. Why? Well, look at the subtle curve of the shade, for starters, and its classic oval shape. Did you know the Swedish architect and designer Greta Grossman designed it way back in 1950? It still looks thoroughly modern, in the quiet way of most mid-century Swedish modernism. The shade may be tilted 90 degrees and rotated a full 360 degrees, allowing you to concentrate light right where you wish.

Bare Ring Sconce

I doubt you’ll find a more exposed or minimal wall light than this Bare Ring Sconce from Brendan Ravenhill and Eric Trine. It suspends the bulb in a simple brass ring, with a glass socket to reveal the lightโ€™s electrical components. Honesty definitely is the best policy when it comes to this fixture. Available in a hard-wire version with powder coated steel wall plate or a a plug-in version with switch.

Wald HI-LO Lamp

Remember the Wald Plug Lamp we posted earlier this year? Imagine it a little more refined, with a dimmer switch, and you’ve got the Wald HI-LO Lamp. Just like the original, there’s no need for hardwiring, as it plugs directly into an electrical socket. Talk about an easy installation, huh? Available in 3 subtle color finishes- Olive Drab, Dark Plum and Neutral.

Wald Plug Lamp

The Wald Plug Lamp is a floor lamp without the floor. Huh? It plugs directly into a wall socket, using the plug connection as its sole support. So, technically, I suppose it’s actually a wall light, but we’ll accept the categorization of a floor lamp because of its height. Might I point out how much easier this would be to install than a wall sconce? It could be a clever bedside or sofa-side option for those of you who currently rent (or for those who are habitually lazy and/or averse to installing light fixtures).

Dot Wall Light

There’s nothing complicated about the Dot Light from Lambert & Fils; it’s just a handmade brass disc with plenty of nylon wire to hardwire it onto a wall (or specify a rocker switch and plug). However, the size of the circular base makes the warm reflection of the bulb more visible and entirely more elegant (in a subtle Hollywood glamour sort of way).

Triangle and Line Light by Fort Makers

What the what?! A triangular line light is just what these dreary and dark evenings need, and, if you’re lucky enough to have several hundred dollars, you might want to check out the Walnut Line Light by Fort Makers as well. Either (or both) would scratch any minimally-designed lighting needs you may have, as it’d be hard not to fall a little in love with such spare graphic designs executed with such precision.

Big Tournebrille Lamp

The Serge Mouille Wall Sconce is well beyond most of our budgets, and that’s why seeing the price tag of the Tournebrille Lamp by Tse & Tse is a nice surprise. It’s a little less grande than the Mouille Sconce, yet that’s not a bad thing. Flying under the design radar occasionally might just make your home more interesting, and you’ll certainly have more money in the bank. A rotating shade and swing arm make the black matte Tournebrille an excellent, affordable choice for your preferred reading spot.

SnapRays Guidelight

There aren’t many night lights to write home about (except for the Night Light Galaxy), and even less that are considered particularly safe for those kiddos running around. That’s exactly why it’s worth taking a look at the SnapRays Guidelight. It replaces your standard electrical outlet cover plate, and lights the way with LEDs embedded along the bottom edge. No more clunky night lights hogging your outlets. Installation is easy (no wiring necessary), it simply clips around your outlet to draw power (5 milliamps = ~10 cents a year). A light sensor automatically detects when it’s needed, allowing it to turn on in the dark and off when it’s light.

Trouble Light

Oh, what to do when you need a wall sconce but you only have around $150 to spend? Turn your eyes toward this straightforward fixture by Sam Stewart available at Artware Editions. A spherical 25-watt bulb hangs from a cotton cloth cord (choose between Solid red, Solid black, Black/white stripe, Red/white stripe, or Golden yellow); just wrap the cord around the wooden mount for the desired height.

Swing Arm Wall Sconce

If you need/want an inexpensive, simple wall sconce, get a load of this matte black steel light designed by Lime Studio (and available from CB2). Not bad, eh? A swivel arm gets light right where you want, making it perfect for a bedside reading companion. And, if you have some time, take a look at Lime Studio’s other products- they show a lot of promise, especially if other items will lean towards an affordable price point like this lamp.

Night Light Galaxy

Sorry, I can’t help but share certain space imagery applied to ordinary household goods. You’ve seen the Night Light Moon, Earth, but this one has a portion of the Galaxy on its translucent disc, and it’s only $6! Calm down, there’s enough for everyone. For the bathroom, hallway, bedroom, etc. (I swear my home would look like a crazy Cosmologist’s if I didn’t have a little bit of restraint.)

Rensselaer Single Sconce

She blinded me with science!“… that song will immediately spring to mind each time you walk by this wall sconce, for how could it not when it’s made from real chemistry lab supplies? And, shall we take a moment to admire how the look may change depending on the finish, cord color, and bulb you choose? Note: you might be a little sick of Edison bulbs, because they seem to be everywhere now, but I think there’s still something very appealing about their soft, candle-like glow and I refuse to be put off by their popularity.
