After moving out to the Northwest it didn’t take long to notice that people take their coffee pretty seriously out here, and I’m not talking about Starbucks or Seattle’s Best. A welcoming local cafe is always a stone’s throw away, catering to both the casual coffee drinker and as well as patrons of the most distinguised taste. In Portland, one of the most unique cafes I have come across is Coava in the Central Eastside district. Sharing a space with a bamboo plywood showroom, the interior is industrial chic (fancy enjoying your coffee at a tablesaw?) yet is warmed by a large, welcoming bamboo counter and of course the lingering aroma of coffee beans. Serving coffee via a Chemex pour-over brewer is their first choice for a rich tasting cup, however co-owner Keith Gehrke saw the single-use paper filters to be quite wasteful. This cardboard clock arrives at your door flat packed and unadorned, ready for you to assemble and decorate in whatever way you see fit. What is a ‘Vide poche’? It’s a valet tray for keeping your keys and coins and such (the literal translation is glove compartment, or according to this site, empty pocket). For those of us that are a bit clumsy (or lazy), this tray would be a dream. Filled glasses and dishes keep their place even if you swing the tray, allowing you to move from kitchen to dining table to outdoors in a breeze. The loop at the top of the straps means you can carry even more in one hand if necessary.

Nylon handles are removable from the aluminum tray.

One of life’s little annoyances is trying to get a piece of tape with one hand. This MDF dispenser by Chris Hardy has a sticky polyurethane gel base which adheres (lightly) to any surface, making one-handed procurement possible.

As promised, the Spica Light in all its glory… by none other than Iacoli & McAllister. This pic shows the Spica threaded (threaded!), and obviously it’s a bit more expensive with those hand-wrapped threads, but it sure packs a punch with a little bit of color detail. Of course, without threads the Spica is still spectacular. Also, the smaller black version with threads is over at Gretel ($795), if you’d like to see how it looks.

Sometimes, and I do stress sometimes, planners are filled way too quickly with meetings and other work related stuff to the point where any home notes fall by the wayside. Perhaps it would be beneficial to have a separate journal altogether to jot down groceries, bills, DIY projects, etc… even to make note of books and movies to read and watch. Could be a smart way to keep work and home life separate (literally).
