London Fog Tea Towel

These tea towels from zakka nouveau are done in soft colors with the simplest of raindrops for a pattern… more than tempted to snap up the whole set, which runs $60 for all three.

First Kiss and London Fog shown above.

Prato Umbrella Stand

I’ve seen my fair share of umbrella stands and I think this one gets an award. After all, on a grey and rainy day, seeing a faux patch of grass holding up a few umbrellas might just cheer someone up a tiny bit. It can hold up to twenty (!) umbrellas.

Made of synthetic resin and steel.

Utensilo

Occasionally we’ll get emails from some of you saying that links on old posts need updating (and thank you very much for those emails, because there’s no way we’re able to spot them all on our own), and a few of you have noticed lately that this Utensilo post from Oct 2, 2007 needed some attention. So.

The Unten.Silo was designed in the 1960s by Dorothe Becker and Ingo Maurer, and has become a somewhat iconic storage solution. I love the fact that it keeps everything in its right place, whether it be in a office workspace, playroom, or kitchen.

Available in white, red, or black.

Union Wood Co. Serving Tray

I’m such a sucker for reclaimed wood. These serving trays by Union Wood Co. are built from old growth fir boards from a recently renovated RCMP Livery stable in Vancouver. Each tray is unique (though they all have brass handles and rubber feet on the bottom).

Licht Lights

Back in November, Supermarket asked us to pick a few things (see Guest curator: Better Living Through Design) and these lamps from Soo Kwon not only made the list but are still stuck in my head. With such a high-design look, it’s amazing that they have such an affordable price tag.

Bias Clock

The angled surface of this clock allows you to choose its bias. Maybe put it up high facing down towards your desk, or off to the side… either way, I like the idea of less craning-the-neck to check the time.

Plattfuss Rubber Bands

Rubber bands made of recycled bicycle tubes. Making flats useful = nice. Also, another item making flats useful is the smart IT Clip that Simon posted a while back. It allows you to make your old inner tubes into tie down straps.

A bag of 70 in assorted sizes.

Lift Lamp

This is a custom ordered item from Science&Sons, who are well known for their Phonfone, just to get that out of the way first. Now, besides it being actually an interesting shape for a light, the idea behind the LIFT LAMP was to create an object that was fun to clean, so, to dust this lamp you’d fly it like a kite. Delightful idea, isn’t it? The light collapses down fairly quickly for easy transport.

Materials: Sailcloth, Graphite tubing, metal fittings
Size: 48″ DIA. x 22″ H.

Stick2Me

This is the sort of thing you’d see in a public setting perhaps, but I think it could work in a home environment just as well*. Whichever you prefer, this set is available in both broadsheet-format and magazine/tabloid size and has room for eight or four newspaper sticks.

-Available in oak and birch
-Treated with cold-pressed linseed-oil

*Guess it depends on your taste, but I like seeing some public purposed items appropriated.

Big Top Tablecloth

Normally soft, subdued colors draw my eye, and I would guess most of us play it pretty safe when it comes to color in our homes. Maybe it’s the perpetual grey weather of January that has me itching for crazy-in-your-face color… you know, the kind that makes your eyes water and brings delight and sometimes even a ‘for goodness sakes!’ response. Now, this tablecloth might not tick all those boxes, but it is ‘fun’, with its big top imagery, even if it is a little bit juvenile. It’s appealing with its bright red and white and tassels (tassels, for goodness sakes!). Just the thing for this time of year.

Handmade of cotton in India.
