I remember emailing back and forth with Tauba Auerbach back in December of 2008 after seeing her amazing deck of cards as a prototype in Wallpaper* magazine. At the time, she was saying that she was looking into production, so I’m terribly pleased to see that they’re finally available for sale because I was wanting to purchase them as a gift for my father, a mathematician.

Here’s a rundown on the final product: It’s two different decks of cards, one with symbols of mathematical functions instead of the usual hearts, clubs, spades and diamonds. On the other deck, instead of the usual symbols there are geometric shapes.

Simple, but the gold finish dresses it up quite a bit, no? It’s nice that it’s just the base and the glass- no shade to take up space. There’s also a floor lamp version but it’s price is a bit steeper at $880.

I think the blustery cold has me looking for spring (any day now we’ll turn the corner), so of course this melamine plate caught my eye. It’s refreshing to see some greenery, even if it is on a plate.

If this had title nor description, would you know what it was? I would guess an art-ish object of some sort. This polished piece of steel is used to aerate wine in to a decanter. It’s almost always a delight when an object has beauty apart from its function.

If you look closely at the top print, you can see the animals’ shadows make a sentence. I’d seen the ‘STATES UNITED’ print (bottom right) before somewhere, but looking at the whole collection of prints makes me appreciate each individual one even more.

*All prints are created using a xylene transfer process*. It’s like a screenprint, but without the screen, and the artwork is hand-transferred inch by inch over a long hour. Each xylene print is an original, slightly different from the last, all signed and numbered.

Through a partnership with illy coffee experts, artist William Kentridge brings us this limited-edition set of six espresso cups and six illustrated saucers, but it’s not until saucer meets mirror-finish cup that the images become clear and right side up.

Swoon. Designboom has pictures of this lamp when it first hit the scene in ’09 (Milan Design Week) along with the designer’s quote, ‘I designed this lamp with the image of a bird perched silently under the moonlight in mind.’ A lovely thought, isn’t it?

This metal heart ’emits a soft spheric’ sound so that when you’re crying yourself to sleep on Valentine’s Day you’ll have some comfort. Just kidding. Forgo those lame boring valentine’s gifts (roses, candy, blah) for this little gift, because it’ll last a heck of a lot longer and it looks waaay better than any red/pink-plastic/cellophane-stuffed-bear/basket type of thing. Pair it with a sentimental note and you’re done*.

This cheese board might just look like any ol’ tree slice, but it’s actually from amboyna trees in Thailand. Considering that the roots and branches from the tree would otherwise be burned, it’s nice to know that it can grace our tabletop instead.

-Hand sanded and finished with palm oil.

My boyfriend recently got a wheat grass juicer so I’ve been trying to find cool containers to start a little wheat grass garden in. These nice little planters are a perfect shape for wheat grass and would look cool growing on your dining table or in your kitchen.

Too cute. Not only do I eat pork, but I think they’re totally adorable as inanimate objects. Conflict of interest with earthy-crunchy types? Maybe, but I’d rather this than a talking carrot. Barry White’s “Never, Never Gonna Give You Up” just took on new meaning.

I’ve always been drawn to terrariums. Too bad I have little to no luck with plants, otherwise I’d think about getting one of these quirky fellows from litill. They’ve got quite a few shapes and sizes to choose from (starting at $125 for a 5″x6″), so take a look if you’re interested.

I’ve never been into West Elm’s style ever, a bit too drab and generally unexciting for me. However they’re definitely on the right track here with these new wood boxes. Woodgrain combined with super glossy lacquer is a great combination.
