This is a lovely example of how handmade items can have incredible detail. Wonder how long it would take to embroider something this size? Probably way longer than I’d ever have patience for…

This incredibly soft cushion slip has been hand-embroidered from the finest silk threads and is backed in ivory cream 100% cotton. The cream silk embroidery follows the movement of the central gray leaf design giving the pattern a three-dimensional effect. The indentations of the stitches are barely visible as they have been so tightly bound, creating smooth lines and curves. Please note that this cushion slip is sold without the cushion.

Designed in 1975, this flatware set has some sensible attributes to be sure (if only it were a tad bit more sensible price wise too…).

Carl Pott dedicated his career to studying the ergonomics of eating and using what he learned to design innovative flatware…To create the five-tined fork, which was an innovation when it was introduced, Pott extended its width and made the shape slightly spooned. These changes made for easier scooping of sauces and vegetables, like peas. The knife has a micro-serrated edge for cutting, and each piece has a fine groove at the end of each handle. “I am far from granting flatware more importance than it deserves,” said Pott. “However, as a daily tool, assuming it is functional and aesthetically pleasing, it is one of the cornerstones of our culture. How can we reach the summit, when the foundation of that which is ours, our home and our tools, is not solid, full of clarity and beauty?” Pott 33 is made of 18/10 stainless steel and each piece is handcrafted by artisans at a company of remarkable pedigree…The five piece set includes a knife, tablespoon, teaspoon, dinner fork, and salad fork. If you’re thinking about writing in because you’re offended by us posting a paper gun, go right ahead, but please (pretty please) do so after considering the designer’s intent.

London-based Martin Postler considers the aesthetics and lethal appeal of the Awtomat Kalaschinkowa—a.k.a. an AK-47—and by doing so, highlights the darker side of iconic design. Take away its original functional intent by rendering this death machine in paper, and the focus shifts to the power of form, and all that’s implied with it. Part of Postlerferguson’s Death Machine series, the Paper AK-47 was glittered, graffiti’d and garnished by respected street artists for the well-received Paper Wars exhibit in London this summer. Now, if only the world’s wars could be solved with a bit of paper, craft glue and a pack of colored Sharpies.

Seeing as the summer is drawing to a close, it’s time to savor those evenings sipping refreshments. Why not do it in style from hand sculpted black and white etched cups? (Of course, it takes little investigative work to see these would be more appropriate for a discerning collector than in a child’s hand…)

Spot the odd one out! Painting the interior of one of the cups yellow, Rosaria Rattin sees no rules in ceramic design; she approaches each porcelain surface as if boldly printing fabric. Each cup is delicately sculpted and etched by hand, creating lines and shapes with individual character. Set of six assorted porcelain cups with a hint of lemon.
