I sat down with my friend Sebastian Kaufmann to talk about his store, Kaufmann Mercantile, his philosophy behind choosing products, and the theme that we are constantly reminded of in our daily lives, the virtue of choosing well made over disposable. Kaufmann, born in Frankfurt, Germany, approaches the store with exacting high standards that are present in everything in the store: Timeless. Classic. Durable. As as supplement to the store, there's a blog written by Kaufmann and several other contributors (one of them, David Vega, shown below with Kaufmann), focusing on utilitarian household items, their materials and their construction techniques.…

Creative Types: Kathy Dalwood
Written by Katie on May 9, 2011. Permalink
Kathy Dalwood is a British artist and designer whose work focuses on small and large sculptures, public installations, and interior design services. I had a chance to get to know Kathy in London after purchasing one of her concrete figurines and we had many lovely conversations about art and design. Kathy was, of course, one of the first people on our list for our burgeoning Creative Types series. She was kind enough to let us ask her a few questions and take a few shots of her home. kh:How would you describe your design style? KD:My design style is a…

We sat down with the designers of Chadhaus design (above from L-R, Dinah Dimalanta, Emily Robertson and Chad Robertson) located in Seattle, Washington and learned a little more about their firm, Chadhaus. In addition to being designers for the firm, Dinah and Chad build the furniture in the studio. The first thing I have to say about the work of Chadhaus is that in addition to using beautiful woods and having a very cohesive design aesthetic, the craftsmanship of their work is impeccable. It's because of this attention to detail that the simplicity and beauty of their designs really bring…

This week I've been obsessing over data and ways to communicate it. For inspiration there's FlowingData and also Feltron and his blog. For those of you who like to get your hands dirty there's: Processing.org and Processingjs: a fun, javascripty and open source programming language for data visualization. There's also D3 and another one called Protovis. The 10 Best Foods for Your Looks Living in 90 square feet in Manhattan! How would you organize the space? I think I'd build the floors up and do hidden storage in compartments below the floor. All that stuff above me would give me…

Geared for DIYers and budgeters, a kitchen renovation can realistically be achieved for under $400!
