MINKA Documentary
Written by Katie on November 22, 2010. Permalink
Filmaker Davina Pardo is working on a short documentary entitled 'MINKA', a story about a 250 year old Japanese farmhouse. Originally inspired by the book Minka: My Farmhouse in Japan by retired AP foreign correspondent John Roderick, the film looks to be well worth watching, and seeing as they're still raising funds to finish off distribution costs, you can check out the trailer below or on their fundraising page to see if you'd like to help out. "Minka" trailer from Birdling Films on Vimeo. The book, Minka: My Farmhouse in Japan, available for $24.95 at Princeton Architectural Press.

Free Furniture Plans from Recession Design
Written by Simon on October 20, 2010. Permalink
Extremely talented, and perhaps a bit strange (what's up with the chemical suits?), Italian design group Recession Design has created a whole line of modern furnishings for in and out of the home, and provided all the assembly plans free to download. I'm really digging the pastel palette and overall design layout too. Over 30 projects are available to download as a PDF at their website. Warning: the instruction are in Italian.

Written by Katie on September 27, 2010. Permalink
Here's several photos from the past few days of London Design Festival. By no means are they comprehensive, but they at least show some of products that stood out. (Fyi, some photos are from the 100% Design preview post from last wednesday.)

ACNE Furniture Collection at Liberty
Written by Katie on September 27, 2010. Permalink
As part of the London Design Festival, ACNE launched its first furniture collection at Liberty. Inspired by the work of Swedish designer Carl Malmsten, Jonny Johansson (creative director of ACNE) distorted the lines of the furniture to create an altogether strange version of seating shapes. The five sofas will be available exclusively at Liberty this spring.

100% Design (preview)
Written by Katie on September 22, 2010. Permalink
We've been getting all sorts of emails on London Design Week events, but the big two that I'll definitely be attending are 100% Design and Tent London. After a quick look through 100% Design's gallery preview, these are the products I'm looking forward to seeing in person tomorrow. I'll plan to take some pics (if/when allowed) and upload them afterwards. As usual, keep in mind that all products usually take a while to become available through retail websites, so contact the designer directly if you have questions.

FLAMMA-Making a fire with Ikea products
Written by Kris on September 9, 2010. Permalink
There's something really satisfying about watching this man start a fire using exclusively Ikea products. It does feel a little Rube Goldbergian, knowing that you could just start a fire with matches, but it's nice to see ingenuity at work. For more information you can see Helmut Smits' site here.

What Sofa is this?
Written by Katie on August 13, 2010. Permalink
Sarah, one of your fellow readers, emailed in asking what sofa this might be. At first glance I thought it was the Tufty Time, but it's a little bit different, obviously. Any ideas? Please comment if you think you know. Update: Doug C. has shared his wisdom. It's the Strips sofa by Cini Boeri for Arflex (1972). Thanks Doug.

More notes on annoying ads
Written by Katie on August 12, 2010. Permalink
Okay, so apparently those terribly annoying auto play ads are still happening to some of you. To those of you that have emailed, thank you very much for letting us know. I thought we got every last horrible one, but apparently not. Again, we've never intended these ads to be on our site, and sincere apologies that you've had to put up with them. If an auto play ad happens to you and you feel like helping, can you take a quick screen shot and email us? That will help us track down the guilty party and get these ads…
