Sure, a simple shelf sounds okay, but then you see the frame sort of floats away from the wall, and that means extra dimension. Not an extra dimension (don’t get too excited), just extra dimension, as in, a pinch of optical illusion when you walk by. The robots and bus make it look perfect for a kid’s room, but the collectors among us know an extra shelf or two means room to show off those few valuables/momentos that are worth keeping.

Hmm, what’s this? A big ball of yarn? Not quite, though on first glance the assumption is understandable. It’s a chair hand-knitted with cotton cord by a group of women of Mexican-descent in Los Angeles, California. Amaya Gutierrez, the designer, works with this team to produce textiles inspired from her home town in Oaxaca, Mexico. Gutierrez aims for style and durability in all of her products with hopes it will limit further consumption in future years. A worthwhile goal, for sure.

It’s about time that a modern version of the porch swing comes along, especially as winter is winding up and spring is on its way. This swing has a no-nonsense steel frame with cypress wood seats and two moveable backrests that allow multiple seating options (see SwingLab’s gallery for more pics). Poufs with trays! That’s just what we never knew we needed. Without the tray, it serves as an excellent spot for resting your feet and/or extra seating, and with the tray, it’s a functional side table or an impromptu in-front-of-the-tv dining surface. It’s a little dreary outside, and a Monday at that, so a jolt of color is called for. Wood (coffee table) + chevron parquet + simple iron base = no brainer. Parquetry seems to have been making a comeback with a few interiors featuring the old school look to its best advantage (a few bookmarked images on tumblr). All good news, of course, but if you can’t actually install those lovely patterned floors in your own space, you can certainly apply the technique to a coffee table top. This particular table is made of sustainable shesham wood and is left unfinished, so do be careful with your colorful beverages.

Modular shelving? For real? Yes, it’s true, and I do have to say these look great in person, so you have my personal nod of approval. This set certainly isn’t new, as we first posted it years ago, but it’s worth remembering if you’re in the market for a storage system. The Shilf System allows for custom configurations without tools or hardware- you heard me right, no tools or hardware. You can buy the components individually or purchase a set, either way, you’ll have some great shelves that are easy to put together and easy to alter should your storage needs change.

A floating wall desk for under a grand might sound as likely as a hipster who’s never considered ironic facial hair, but stranger things have happened. The floating wall desk by Dario Antonioni is just under the $700 mark and has a full slide out tray to double your work area. There’s also a small wire management slot to keep your cords tidy. Need it be emphasized that you’ll have to follow the installation instructions correctly or you’ll have a small disaster at hand? If you’re not particularly handy, enlist help before tackling it on your own.

Glossy peacock blue might just be the jolt of color that’s needed for the semi-dreary days of February, and hey, an extra seat for $170 is reasonably affordable considering it’s made of iron and acacia wood. It certainly won’t get wobbly or fall apart, which is more than you can say for other assembly-required seating. A small cutout in the seat makes it easy to move around.

Perhaps you should take this desk’s name in reference to Mantises being highly visual organisms that are skilled in mimicry rather than their tendency for occasional sexual cannibalism, for the Mantis Desk does successfully blend in as a simple, modern workspace by hiding all manner of cables (via a discreet cable management system) and providing just enough space for notes and office supplies (see noteboard and drawer- there’s a double bookend as well). In multiples or alone, this desk would do well in keeping your officemates- or just you- organized and on task.
