Felt is ridiculously popular in furniture and product design right now. A new felted-whatever seems to be coming out every other day so it takes a little more effort to make something that will stand out. These pieces from Austrian children’s furniture company Perludi are doing just that.  The material is properly applied in three ways: it adds cushioning and padding for safety, it creates a playing surface for use with hook-and-loop fastners, and it adds some really fun color to the products. Perludi creates amazing non-felted products as well, but I had to just point these out in particular because it’s so refreshing and exciting to see felt used in a new and creative way.

The quieter sibling of the M’Afrique family, this chaise by Moroso features a rather subtle pattern. You can rest assured that any of the chaises will do fine either indoors or out as they’re all made from handwoven nylon.

The Piegato wall shelf maximizes efficiency and material use by being constructed from a single piece of laser-cut steel. It ships flat and all that’s needed to “assemble” it is to simply bend it into shape. Available in yellow, orange, blue, and green.

Take a look at this shelf: half wall sculpture and half functional storage object, it’s made from one flat sheet of metal which is then hand folded along perforated cuts, giving a stitched detail along the edges. House Industries is now taking deposits for the second edition of the Neutra Boomerang Chair. I’m sure you can see the boomerang-shaped veneered plywood frame, from which it gets its name, but for historical relevance you might be interested to know that Richard Neutra designed this chair for the interiors of the Channel Heights Housing Project (San Pedro, California) in 1942.

The graphic colors and lines of the gym court sure make an eye catching pattern on this eco-friendly cabinet. Originally this series was created in 2008 using old floor boards (see Old Floor Board Edition, which is perhaps my favorite) and more recently Mater has added the Pine and Oak Editions. Plus, you might be happy to hear that Mater donates a percentage of profits to promoting sports in developing countries.

This chair made the rounds after its launch at Salone del Mobile, but it wasn’t until I saw the production pics and the video did I fully appreciate the design. Thomas Heatherwick (of recent UK Pavillion fame) was inspired by the craft of large scale metal spinning used to make Timpani drums. Using a rotationally symmetrical form, the Spun Chair appears to be more sculpture when upright, yet when lent on its side, it becomes a comfortable and playful chair. This version of the chair by Magis (shown above) is made of plastic rather than metal, which means it can be used outdoors and eventually recycled.
