I love the look of this so so much (such fun!).

How can one design a settee which satisfies the requirements of the majority of users? Different people have different physiognomies. And then there is the subjectivity of taste. CONFLUENCES is a ‘reconciliatory’ settee, since it draws its inspiration from such differences. MIO’s Jaime Salm and Stephen Cooke utilize particleboard in this smart storage cabinet.

Much of today’s contemporary furniture incorporates hollow-core materials covered by various veneers. In direct contrast to these pieces is Naked Line, a cabinet that proudly reveals the sustainable materials we have come to hide. Taking advantage of the color, texture and cost efficiency of formaldehyde-free particleboard, this cabinet represents a naked and honest approach to affordable furniture. Made from 100 percent pre-consumer waste wood, this piece has sturdy sliding doors and back panels made from powder-coated steel.

This chair at first appears to balance only on its front legs. Clever.

A chair that integrates shadow into its structure…At first glance it is a simple chair that seems to defy gravity by standing upright while only having two front legs, but on closer inspection the shadow is part of the chair and made from steel, which is attached to a metal frame built inside the chair. I finally saw this in person whilst making the rounds in NYC this weekend for ICFF (picture montage to follow shortly), and I do have to say I was impressed with how sleek and simple this table was up close. I give it two thumbs up.

Interchangeable legs and a drop-dead blue color qualifies this cabinet for my wish list…unfortunately, the price makes it go into the ‘if-I-win-the-lottery’ subcategory.

Interchangeable legs support this Showtime Cabinet as it expresses dichotomy and symbiosis. Things internal and external play out in organic forms and established classicism, resting against each other, elegantly coexisting. Noticeable inspiration comes from classical MGM musicals in terms of the dramatic and personified shapes for which the Spanish designer seems to have a penchant.

A mobile bench, made of ecologically preserved Accoya wood with a built-in wheelbarrow wheel. The surprising combination of familiar elements strengthens the active ‘exterior feel’ of the bench.

Inspired by stools used in the Brazilian countryside, designer Flavia Pagotti Silva created this contemporary seat. In Portuguese, “bate-papo” refers to an informal conversation between friends. This low, comfortable stool, made of four plywood disks attached to the chair’s frame through ball joints is meant to be used casually and as additional seating in informal settings. Designer Sergio Rodrigues favors working with traditional materials like leather, wood, and cane splints in his product designs. The Mocho Stool, an update on the traditional milkmaid’s stool used throughout Brazil, is made of a solid hardwood frame, a single-lathed hollowed seat, and three lathed legs. A handle is incorporated into the design of the stool’s seat, making it easy to transport from place to place. Made of eucalyptus wood.

Whoa, check this chair out. If you’re considering a lounge chair in a major-purchase sort of way, you might consider this one for it’s relative rarity.

Originally designed in 1963, just 300 pieces were made due to the complexity of the chair’s design. Just a few of the originals exist today. One is in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. In keeping with Jalk’s intentions, the chair and tables are reproduced in their original materials, teak and Oregon pine as well as black-stained ash. Two pieces of wood are moulded and conjoined in this daring design, which won Britain’s Daily Mail Design Competition in 1963.
