What?! You did’t build the chair you sit upon? Well, we all know that you’ve got extra elbow grease to spare, and hey, when’s the last time you picked up a hammer anyways? This Sedia Chair, designed by Enzo Mari in 1974, arrives ready for assembly; all you need is your brain, half an hour, and a hammer. It is what it is- a reclaimed teak rocker. Yet, without an image next to that title you might think of a more antiquated version that would not work in most modern settings. That’s exactly why this particular rocker from SOBU is impressive- so sleek and simple, with straight lines and a slight curve to give comfort and movement.

So, if you peruse the decor magazines, you might have seen the ads for the Design by Conran collection at JC Penny. Have you had a chance to take a look? Yea/nay? Of what I think are the winners, first up is the Elder Chair, and despite its shape reminding me a little of Chairy or some other kid’s show chair, I like the classic proportions and generous size. It looks like the quintessential curl-up-and-read-a-book chair. And, hey, you’ve got to respect the lovely cobalt blue hue, even if it’s a bit too bold for your living area.

Hmm, what’s this? A big ball of yarn? Not quite, though on first glance the assumption is understandable. It’s a chair hand-knitted with cotton cord by a group of women of Mexican-descent in Los Angeles, California. Amaya Gutierrez, the designer, works with this team to produce textiles inspired from her home town in Oaxaca, Mexico. Gutierrez aims for style and durability in all of her products with hopes it will limit further consumption in future years. A worthwhile goal, for sure.

The Peg Lounge Chair, you say, haven’t we featured that before? Nope, we’ve featured the Peg Chair, but not the lounge version. Dixon wanted a mix of of traditional pub furniture with a modern edge, and this durable chair was the end result. And, good news, the price listed is for two chairs, so no googly eyes needed. The dark brown finish is intended to deepen with age and was particularly chosen as an antithesis to the recent Scandinavian blond wood furniture craze (which is still acceptable in many interiors, of course).

$299 for a rocking chair? Pretty good price, I’d say. Felted wool cushion (in clover or storm) keeps you comfortable while the frame is made from solid elm. It’s an extremely simple silhouette and has a Scandinavian vibe without looking too IKEA-ish. Anyone know how comfortable it is?

Hmm, this chair from Room & Board has a quiet sort of beauty, doesn’t it? It has just enough mid century modern flavor to keep it from being boring, yet it’s not something that screams ‘look at me, look at me’ when you first enter the room. It would be an excellent seating choice for a low key area. You have a choice between solid maple, solid cherry, solid walnut or solid maple with ebony stain (do you get that it’s made from solid wood?).

Crate and Barrel revisits a classic 60’s shape with tufted and buttoned cushions and updated colors. Just under a grand.

Perusing the various Windsor chairs designed by Matthew Hilton (for De La Espada), made me think that I had recently sighted a similar modern Windsor lounge somewhere else… and indeed, I had… at West Elm. Maybe it’s obvious which one’s which, but have a guess at the price difference and see if you’re right…
