Monarchy Rocking Stool

If you think this is too expensive for a rocking stool, perhaps we should put it to a test and compare it to a Fit-Chair. Sure, the exercise-ball-as-chair does wonders for your posture, but it looks horrible. As in, so horrible it’s offensive to the eyes. Contrast the exercise-ball-as-chair with the Monarchy Rocking Stool by Feld. If I had to choose which one to have in my own home, I’d save up my pennies for a very long time and, you guessed it, get the Monarchy Stool. It swivels and rocks forwards and backwards and sideways, and looks fifty times better than the aforementioned alternative.

Pushpin Cork Stool

As the besocked gentleman demonstrates, this Pushpin Cork Stool functions well as a seating option or as a suitable surface for books and refreshments. As we all know, cork is sustainable (when harvested correctly), and well known for its impermeability, buoyancy, elasticity, and fire resistance. Taiwanese based company Cooima (means “can do” in Chinese) produces the Pushpin Cork Stool.

Wool Pouf by Ferm Living

This octahedral* pouf would add a little geometry to a space while providing a very comfortable place to rest one’s weary feet. Never underestimate a good pouf or an ottoman, by the way, as they make a big difference in relaxation (as witnessed by multitudes who involuntarily emit a sigh of relief once placing their lower limbs on their own said pouf/ottoman). Back to the octahedron: this one is made by Ferm Living and is stable enough to sit on, if you should so choose.

Geo Stool

There’s nothing like a big hunk of zinc to make you plunk down 600 bucks, especially when there’s hexagons pentagons involved. That’s probably an untrue statement, as you most likely wouldn’t plunk down 800 bucks for much of anything, let alone a zinc stool, but the hexagons pentagons do make one a bit dizzy with design lust, as they would fit well in many a modern interior.

Standard Chair

Is this an affordable alternative to Prouvé’s Standard Chair ($935) or what? Answer: Yes, indeed it is. To be clear, in theory, knock-offs or “reproductions” aren’t the best choice if you can afford the original designs, but if an original is way out of your price range, then it’s certainly forgivable. In this case, $325 is way easier on the wallet than $935, especially if you consider ordering multiples ($325 x 4 = $1,300; $935 x 4 = $3,740).

Offcut Bench

Flat-packed and assembled with wooden pegs (no screws or glue necessary), this bench sounds like it has a humble background, but rest assured you can impress your friends with a designer name when they come a-calling. Be sure to tell them that what would normally end up in the rubbish heap (curved and irregular pieces of discarded wood called wayney edges) is made new with the creative mind of Tom Dixon. Available in either natural ($300) or fluoro ($550). And, yes, there is an Offcut Stool ($235) as well.

SCRW Stool by Manuel Welsky

I’m easily charmed by industrial style stools with big chunky exposed screw threads, but what happens when the entire stool is a screw thread? The SCRW Stool consists of a solid cork stool mating with a steel base that height adjusts by simply turning it. SCRW Stool is handmade in Germany with about a month lead time, get in touch with Manuel for more ordering information.

Park Lounge Chair & Ottoman

Is it perhaps time to focus on an investment piece for your lounge area, specifically, a lounge chair? While originally intended to protect the sitter from cold drafts and trap the heat from a fire, wing chairs are now excellent choices for when you need a little seclusion in a large open space. The Park Lounge Chair is a new take on the classic wing/wing-back chair and features a molded foam body with elastic webbing to ensure comfort. And, of course, the silhouette and proportions are nothing short of elegant.

J110 chair

This dining chair catches the eye, doesn’t it? It almost appears to be a lounge chair because of its high back, but rest assured that the seat matches the standard dining height. Made from solid beech, the J110 chair is part of Hay’s 2011 relaunch of the Danish furniture classics originally made for FDB, the Danish Consumers’ Co-operative Society.

Redo-me

Redo-me is a system of pieces that you can reconfigure to make an endless array of furniture. Sounds a little far-fetched, but it looks pretty easy to assemble and the end result has a modern erector-set-feel that actually looks nice. You’ll have to do a little translating on the site to figure out which set combinations you need to make what you want, and for those of you that go for it (despite the overseas shipping) you get a high five. It’s also worth taking a look at Redo-me’s blog for customer pics and such.

2nd Shift Studio

2nd Shift Studio has a couple of seating options worth checking out, and while you’re perusing their site, you’d do well to take a look at their collection of boxes made from reclaimed lumber. The stool (pictured below) has an interchangeable seat top (wood/cushion top) and is priced at $295. The bench features no hardware, instead acrylic rods secure the legs, and can be stacked to create shelving. Contact 2nd Shift Studio for more pricing and info.

Trine Bench-Valet

Update: Does 50% off sweeten the deal? This is on sale for $149 from $299 (I’m assuming until quantities last).

The whole bench/valet idea has seen a few iterations in the last few years, but this version is perhaps the most affordable. A solid ash frame and white lacquer gives a light look while the vertical post provides a spot for hats, bags, jackets or clothes. Might be perfect for an entryway perhaps?

B&B Italia Leather Sectional Sofa by Afra Scarpa

I’m obsessing over 1970’s vintage leather right now, and mainly this arose out of living with a man who is allergic to my cat. My wool Bottoni sofa is a virtual sponge for cat dander, and my poor boyfriend can’t take it any longer. We looked at new leather–but if you buy a high quality piece it will cost about as much as a car. So, on to Ebay I went. I scored a cool 70’s Italian leather piece from B&B Italia for a song. There are similar listings on auction sites for around $8500, but if you’re not in a hurry, you can wait it out and get a good price like I did.

Price: $2000-$8500. Varies by seller.
