Constructed of 3 identical pieces of molded plywood, this was designed by Shuichiro Koizumi who worked retail in Offi’s store in Tokyo. He designed the chair and his manager liked it so much that he brought it to the owner of Offi who immediately offered to develop it.

This has been around the blogger’s block a few times, but I think it’s worth a little bit of talk here on our site. What to do with all those old newspapers? Or that huge stack of magazines? Well, make a chair out of it, of course! It’s not often that you’re involved in the design process of your furniture, so think about it. It’d be fun. And you could change it as often as you like.

The past influences the present- as seen here in the William & Mary Metro Cafe Chair and End Table. I tend towards really appreciating products that meld old styles with new; somehow it gives a sense of history to homes without sacrificing a clean aesthetic.

I like these chairs because they offer the classic elegance similar to Van der Rohe’s Barcelona chairs, but they aren’t as ubiquitous and therefore not as predictable.

They were designed by Poul Kjærholm over the years of 1951 to 1967.

This particular sofa is notable for it’s price as well as the overall shape and style. There’s lots of fabric options to choose from, so that’s nice if you’re not too keen on the mocha-ish color shown. If I had to personally advise you on the quality of this sofa, I’d say it’d be worth the money spent.

Okay, what you see here (from left to right) is the Sande Wave Table, the Sande Side Table, and the Sande Mag Bench. Designed and manufactured by David Brunicardi, each piece is made of repeat laminated, eco-friendly plywood from Ecuador. They’re all quite nice- also keep in mind they are hand made, so that’s why there are some zeros on the price tag.

One of my best friends recently purchased a great 60’s home and really modernized it by redoing the kitchen, wall colors and floors without changing the bones of the house (lots of unadorned windows, open floor-plan, etc.) The furnishings are great as well. Each room is layed out perfectly. In her bedroom, she had this great chair with a throw draped over the back. I was sure she dropped about $3000 on it. I asked her where she got it. “Ikea” she said. I was floored. We all know that Ikea furniture is infamous for being identifiable and it’s something that we all try to avoid, but in some instances (as long as you don’t do your entire house in Ikea) it can totally work. This picture doesn’t really do the chair justice. In the right setting, it can fool the snobbiest of furniture snobs.

The bo chair by Robert Bronwasser was named (I assume) for the visual appearance of the letters it resembles. The chair (the “b”) has a little storage place (the “o”) which extends out and serves as a tiny side table for your drink.

Well, there’s a lot to say about this (as there usually is about sleeper sofas), but I’m not going to go on and on about it- if you like the looks of it, I trust that you’ll visit DWR to read about the history and details. I’m mostly here to say, “hey, look at this, it’s a sleeper sofa and it doesn’t look too bad”. The back bolster pillow adjusts to three different positions so your lower lumbar will be happy and it’s slipcovered so you can remove it for cleaning.

An inexpensive simple bench that doesn’t hurt the eyes. You also have the option of getting a Flop cushion (shown above as well) which has the extra nice feature of folding in half and fitting inside one of the legs of the Squat bench. You can also stack the benches to make shelves (see below).

West elm has released their new line of furnishings for Fall 2005. The sofa is upholstered with tweed and the frame is kiln-dried. (Means all the moisture is taken out before it’s built for extra stability.)
