Afteroom Chair

Upon first glance, you may not notice that the Afteroom Chair only has three legs. If that’s the case, you’re forgiven, but sit up and pay attention. There’s something entirely appealing about reducing materials to the minimum, and that’s exactly what Stockholm studio Afteroom intended when developing this first chair for Menu. The flexible back support extends beyond the back of the seat, giving the chair an airy, open appearance. Quality materials and Afteroom’s minimalist nod to functionalism make this chair a particularly smart choice for any dining or office environment.

Slow Chair & Ottoman

Whenever I see the Slow Chair by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for Vitra, I am reminded of the Maison Flottante where the chair is shown prominently as the main living area seating. Would you believe that the inspiration behind the Slow Chair was ladies’ tights? I’m sure you can, as the strong, precisely shaped knit is stretched over the metal frame, quite similar to a fitted stocking. This sling cover provides soft, ergonomic support and gives a lightweight appearance despite its generous proportions.

Chieftains Chair

When we originally posted the Chieftains Chair designed by Finn Juhl, it was 2011 and it cost $11,500. Today’s price finds it at $17,175, which, unfortunately, is much higher than the rate of inflation. And so goes the world of design classics and their price fluctuations.

Inspired by primitive weaponry, Juhl originally created the chair for the 1949 Cabinetmakers’ Guild in Copenhagen. I’ve long admired this chair, and while the price is firmly outside of any budget I might have in the foreseeable future, I can still appreciate the slight curves and teak and walnut frame that have made it one of the more iconic pieces of mid century design.

MilkMaid Stool Custom

I’m such a sucker for small wooden stools, mostly because they offer quite a bit of versatility. Side table or extra seating, whichever you need, a little stool can be handy to have around. These custom milking stools by grayworksdesign are a variation of the traditional three-legged stool that we all are familar with, but the design is updated just enough to fit into any room, be it rustic or modern. Engraving is also offered should you wish to make it a special gift.

Holy Stool and Candy Table

This colorful table and stool by UM Project would be a great choice for occasional tables. Whether you choose to go monochrome or mix colors, the duo-tone finish would add interest and warmth to a room. It’d be smart to use the sturdy stools as side tables for daily use and then as extra seating when you have a few more guests than chairs.

Plopp Inflated Stool

We’ve featured this little guy before, but after several years, he needs his info updated. This stool appears to be inflated plastic, but is, in fact, made from welded steel sheets that are industrially inflated. This manufacturing process (called FiDU ‘Freielnnen Druck Umformung’ = ‘free inner pressure deformation’) was developed by Oskar Zieta and allows for lightweight forms to hold a fair amount of weight with minimal material. No two are alike.

Tom Dixon Peg Chair

Constructed from natural, solid birch wood, this café chair by Tom Dixon is light-weight and robust. Carry it from the dining area to the living room or office for an extra seat without looking like a weakling, or, more importantly, hurting your back. The “quietly pared down character” of japanese architecture was the inspiration for its functional shape.

Lerival Felt Stool

This isn’t new, but who cares? It’s still a felt stool that holds weight simply by its folds and rivets. Think origami, in a larger scale and in felt. Exploring the most efficient use of fabric led to this design with a comfortable saddle-shaped seat. Designed by Moorhead & Moorhead and manufactured by Lerival.

Model Six Stool

Several years ago when we posted this stool, 2007 to be exact, it was simply known as the ‘Covey Stool’ from the designer Jeff Covey. Now its name is the Model Six, and it’s on sale from MoMA Store for $349.95. Chrome-plated steel legs snap together and the walnut seat can be adjusted from 24″-28″ height, making this strong stool an excellent flat-packed option for your bar or counter area.

Kaktus Stool

Lightweight yet strong, this sturdy aluminum stool can be used indoors or out. Use it as a stool or side table, or, flip it over and it becomes a basket for logs, toys, towels, or whatever else you can think of. Made from 100% recycled aluminum, the Kaktus was inspired by the fibrous skeleton of the Staghorn Cholla cactus. Designed by Enrico Bressan, architect and co-founder of Artecnica.

Lisboa Chairs

Stackable polypropylene chairs might seem more appropriate for restaurant/cafe settings, but they can work just as well for your home, especially if you need a durable seating option that works indoors or out. The Lisboa chair is lightweight and can be stacked up to six high for storage, in either the side or armchair version. And, good news, DWR’s Annual Outdoor Sale means you’ll save 15% through May 27th. Note to parents: if a chair is suitable for contract use, chances are it will withstand your kids’ shenanigans.

Maia Table

You might not like the price tag, but you certainly will like how this side table can also be used as a step stool. No more dangerous episodes of precariously balancing on an inappropriate surface to reach a book, and no more apologies of not having that one extra seat for a surprise guest. Plus, take a look at the joints: it’s clear that this is built to stand the test of time.

Tripod Stool

Like the look of this Tripod Stool? You’re in luck, as it’s on sale until tomorrow, according to its description. Oh, and don’t get too attached to the wooden top without considering the Marble Top version, as you might like a different material thrown into the mix. Oh, and be sure take a look at the Tripod Table, also able to be used as a short stool, which at $146 (again, sale lasts until tomorrow) is one heck of a bargain.

Prouvé Standard SP Chair

Fans of Prouvé are familiar with the high price tags associated with the name, and that’s exactly why everyone should sit up and pay attention to this version of the original Standard Chair. Notice the ‘SP’ in Prouvé Standard SP Chair? That, my dear, indicates ‘Siège en Plastique’ which means an ASA plastic seat and back. Don’t you turn your nose up at the word ‘plastic’, because it’s still an authentic Prouvé chair. A plastic seat and back would make more sense in high traffic areas where you needn’t worry about keeping the surface pristine- a few scrapes and such won’t be as noticeable, and I dare say it’ll be easier to clean. And, it brings the price down to a much friendlier place, which is oh-so-nice to see.
