If you’re sick of stepping on toys or knocking over stacks of paper, do something about it. These modular wooden crates are easily assembled: snap them together, throw in all your miscellany and then stack them up out of the way. And, good news, they’re not expensive.

Need more storage space for paperwork? You could get a ho-hum boring rolling file from an office supply store, or you could shell out a little more dough for one that actually looks like a fair amount of design thought went into its creation. Ethnicraft’s Universo Positivo collection has caught our eye before, and their Billy II Box stands out for its combination of solid oak and lacquered stainless steel. A large opening in the back accommodates cords (not apparent in the picture above, fyi) while one drawer provides just enough space for essentials. Need a stack of drawers instead? Consider the Oak or Walnut Billy Box.

Yes, we posted this years ago (2008!), but this multipurpose unit is still pretty impressive. It serves as a detachable file cabinet, a stool, a rolling cart and, in multiples, even stackable shelves. It’s also recyclable once the plastic wheels are removed, though for the price, you’d be better off selling it to a fellow design aficionado.

Whoa, this cabinet by Xavier Pauchard is on sale for $299, from the regular price of $499. The steel cabinet has 5 compartments with doors that swing up and close magnetically, and it’s available in 4 colors: orange, green, cream, and black. There’s also a 10 drawer version in cream or black, on sale for $510 from $850.

Yeah, yeah, you’ve seen the Enchord Desk before, but did you really take note of the Mobile Cabinet? Priced at $429, it’s definitely more expensive than a run-of-the-mill filing cabinet, but it looks a heck of a lot sleeker than those boring (if not awful) cabinets. A recessed tray on the top means small thingamajigs will stay in reach and there’s a handy cutout for cords and cables. More supplies fit in the front drawer, with books and such in one of the lower compartments, and the removable oak file bin is accessible from either side of the cabinet.

If you’re planning on following Kris’s Paper-free Living guide, then just ignore this little filing cabinet. You won’t need it. However, if you’re the type to hold on to hard copies no matter what, this cabinet is pretty decent for modern-yet-affordable office storage.
Locking file storage accommodates legal or standard sized files.
Available in Black or White.

Behold, the paperless society! Long heralded by media outlets, technology developers, and inveterate optimists, the age of the purely electronic office has arrived! No more will we keep hard copies of our records; no more will we file and retain seven years of receipts; no more will we need to gather and organize in one place disparate materials from various sources, available at our fingertips on demand! But it might be a good idea to have a mobile, locking file cabinet still. You know, just in case.
