I love love love these modern free standing shelves. I think the key to these is that you really need the space in a room to have them set away from the wall with enough room walk around all sides comfortably

I saw this at this year’s ICFF and was instantly drawn to the idea of highlighting a few pair of special shoes. If I had any room in my house for a walk in closet I would definitely use the shrine shoe rack.

Ron Arad’s Bookworm Shelf is not new, of course, but it might worth considering for your library. It’s still an interesting and ‘fun’ sort of piece for displaying books.

Bookworm is a flexible bookshelf that can be constructed in various shapes. Its curvy structure is durable, functional, and eye-catching. Approximately 20 pounds can be stored between each of the seven bookend supports. Mounting hardware included. Made by Kartell of batch-dyed fire-retardant PVC. Assembly required.

This is bare bones minimal with a tiny bit of rustic wood to warm it up. I’d say the prices are reasonable, or at least they don’t hurt the eyes.

Fulton’s minimal lines and mixed materials make a streamlined, rustic-modern statement. The warmth of the richly-figured, reclaimed teak veneer top contrasts beautifully with the industrial black metal frame, finished in three steps for an oxidized effect.

I saw this in person recently (at Matter, which might be my new favorite store), and I have to say it is one impressive piece. Sure, it looks more like an art object than a usable storage tower, but it’s delightfully both.

Stack is a tower of ‘floating’ drawer units that can be pushed and pulled in both directions. This will often result in a random and irregular formality that is both fascinating and unusual to the eye. Stack is available with 8 or 13 drawers.

MIO’s Jaime Salm and Stephen Cooke utilize particleboard in this smart storage cabinet.

Much of today’s contemporary furniture incorporates hollow-core materials covered by various veneers. In direct contrast to these pieces is Naked Line, a cabinet that proudly reveals the sustainable materials we have come to hide. Taking advantage of the color, texture and cost efficiency of formaldehyde-free particleboard, this cabinet represents a naked and honest approach to affordable furniture. Made from 100 percent pre-consumer waste wood, this piece has sturdy sliding doors and back panels made from powder-coated steel.

Interchangeable legs and a drop-dead blue color qualifies this cabinet for my wish list…unfortunately, the price makes it go into the ‘if-I-win-the-lottery’ subcategory.

Interchangeable legs support this Showtime Cabinet as it expresses dichotomy and symbiosis. Things internal and external play out in organic forms and established classicism, resting against each other, elegantly coexisting. Noticeable inspiration comes from classical MGM musicals in terms of the dramatic and personified shapes for which the Spanish designer seems to have a penchant.

These remind me of the Flying V Shelves, except they have more of a wing (which makes them different enough).

Modern media consoles usually seem to be super shiny and pretty expensive. Not that there’s anything wrong with super shiny, but I do like how this ‘rough hewn’ piece gives a casual warmth and contrast to any gadgets displayed on top…and it’s under the $1G mark (even if just barely).

Low flung walnut media console with rough hewn doors that add a contrasting texture to the satin finished frame. Sitting on scaled down beam legs, the Pawnee also features Corian inserts around the finger pulls.
